Yes, LaLa mama will remain open for the time being. But for the real close-down date, you'll have to ask her landlord Jackson who wants to redevelop those two buildings, including his own property agency office. In the meantime, Yo Lau Kee, the wonton noodle shop besides "Best Kebab", opposite Shelly's cake shop, has closed for good, also due to rent problems. Also, the Mr Kebab offshoot in Tsim Sha Tsui, Mr Kebab Cafe, had to close a few weeks back due to rent-related reasons, according to Ali of Mr Kebab. In the meantime, some old favourites like Waterfront with their new Indian menu and Pizza Milano with their new breakfasts and set lunch options seem to be doing great. And you get unexpected entertainment while having a late lunch, for example yesterday: an underwear fashion shoot with two Russian(?)-speaking models, as tall and skinny as expected, especially in ultra-high heels, looking like "Lamma's Next Top Model". Anybody wants to see pictures? |

One more "restaurant" closing down very soon, "C-5" the Pinoy Store in the Red House in Sha Po Old Village, featured in the Lamma-zine just a few weeks ago. No cooking there but they offered home-made takeaway lunches and great home-made Halo-Halo smoothies, my (non-alcoholic) favourite. They're closing not because of increased rent (their 2-year rental contract just started a few months ago) but because some govt. guy mentioned that they're not supposed to have a dry goods shop in that 1-storey type of building. The landlord got cold feet, instead of just ignoring a warning like this, as seems to be the usual practice, usually with no follow-up from the govt. So the landlord is trying to break the rental contract to get them out, giving them only 1 month notice.<HR> On the other hand, brand-new "7th Avenue Bar & Restaurant" is almost ready for its opening, awaiting their temporary license. The walls have been painted and they already had a photo shoot for their future website, I've heard from a friend. To be run and managed by Saheb, all-grown-up-now son of Prafull. I'm looking forward to a new local eatery and a fresh start in this long-neglected location, the former Village Bakery. I hope they'll be serving more than just Indian food (?) as YSW is now well-served with great Indian food by the Beer Garden and especially The Waterfront's new and very well-received Indian menu. |
