the new management at the Bookworm seems to be making a huge difference ... the service is faster and more friendly, the food is tasting better, the atmosphere nicer ... if they could just do away with those bloody Putamaya CDs ...

New management? Who?
It's been run well by Ken for several years now, single-handedly and competently for the last year since Bobsy opened life cafe.

I haven't really noticed any change at all, but quite a few former regulars I've talked to stopped going there for various reasons. The staff seems the same and the menu is still exactly the same, except one new pizza and two daily pastas; some mixed juices have been renamed. But I'm an infrequent guest, as it's not cheap and Lamma-Por is a devoted non-vegetarian.

What this place needs is a bit of buzz, some food promotions, events, concerts or anything creating a bit of much-needed publicity, getting people talking about it again and returning to check it out again under the new ownership.

Any ideas?

OK, good point, I guess 'new proprietership' is more accurate than 'new management'. Basically, what I'm saying is hats off to Ken for all his good work. He deserves our continued support.

Food is good. With French style service.

Nobody picked me up on the 'French style service' remark ?

So what's the latest on French service? Am I missing anything?

Just a guess, I would think that French Style is the same as any other 3rd world country's service - glad to have your money and make you feel special for dining there. Unless they mean capital of france style service, which basically means you might as well put your money into a ceramic pot and throw it at the back side of a donkey. The resulting kicks to the face leaves one with about the same after taste as Parisite service.

What's going on with Bookworm? In the last couple weeks a massive craving has motivated me down there 4-5 times but it's always closed when I get there (during professed business hours!). I emailed, no response. Today I called before going by, no answer. Please don't tell me it's gone forever!

The food is ok but not delicious enough to make me want to go back every week. Maybe that's why it's more of a tourist attraction.
I miss Spicy Island!!!

Yeah, I've been wondering what's going on too. Its still open but it isn't always open during its posted hours. Saturday is wasn't open even at 11am and last monday it was closed. Even when it is open its swamped by tourists and the wait takes for ever on weekends.

I have been really lucky --- have never had a problem with running into a closed Bookworm, other than the first few Monday evenings before I realized that they are often closed on Mondays (just like a few other eateries on the island).

In terms of food, they are good (ok, admittedly better and a lot more choices since I came to the island seven years ago). I would go there most part of the week if I can help it (read: finish work / school early enough to come home on an earlier ferry).

Have you tried the organic wine? Pretty nice, especially the white one.

And I cannot wait for the Christmas roast! Just a couple of months!!

Well, I'll be one of those looking forward to their nut roast and I'm not a vegetarian at all. Less than 7 weeks till the first Advent Nut Roast. Yummy!

But I'll have to investigate about their real opening hours. They were closed last Thu AND Friday and no notice on the door at all. Ken has been understaffed recently, but the staff vacations are over now and it should return to normal operating hours.

According to their info on the web page I'm maintaining for them they should be open 7 days a week: click here.

I'm glad other people are having similar experiences and I'm not going crazy. I wonder if somebody who knows the management could ask them to just be a little more clear about their opening hours?

Of course, now I've got their phone number in my mobile so I just call ahead to mitigate the risk of extreme letdown. At the same time, it would be nice for my own sake to know in advance when I can count on Bookworm to supply their uniquely tasty goats cheese mediterranean salad...

I just met the manager, Ken, yesterday at the laundry shop.

I asked him about it. He admitted to having had staff problems, vacations, etc.

I asked him if he'd be open today as I was just going to grab a late lunch. He said yes, but when I went there a few minutes later it was closed again, on a Monday afternoon. Maybe I misunderstood him...

Usual, unofficial closing day is Thursday, even though it doesn't say so on their printed materials and website.

Ken said that they should be back to normal opening hours soon:

Mon-Fri 10am - 9pm
Sat & public holidays 10am - 9pm
Sundays 9am - 9pm

Right, just called (Friday 18:02) and no answer... called again, no answer (18:04). Looks like they are closed yet again.

who the hell said that about french service being like third world ,some arrogant twat no doubt
admit service can be slow ,but food well worth the wait,top marks from me but what would i know ,i only worked for the french chef,to french embassador in finland!!!and i,m not even a chef!
