It was very saddening to find out that Pierre passed away on Sunday. I saw him quite often up in Sai Kung where we both moved to last year and found that he was a very changed person.
It was also sad, though not surprising, to find that the SCMP did a bit of hack journalism on it.
All the best to Angela and Montana.

Boxing circles are in shock after Pierre Ingrassia, a colourful martial arts personal trainer and promoter, was found dead in a Wan Chai love hotel on Sunday.

The 45-year-old Swiss-born kickboxer, who was a former Muay Thai and karate world champion, was found dead and alone at the Villa Victoria Hotel in Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, when staff broke down the door after he did not answer calls on Sunday afternoon.

Ingrassia, who owned two gyms in the city, had checked in for three hours.

In October, Michael Victore, 51, and Paul Cherry, 45, were found dead in Wan Chai's Grand Hyatt Hotel after taking heroin and cocaine.

Police said a postmortem examination on Ingrassia had not given a conclusive reason for his death. "We will carry out toxicology examinations on Wednesday. The case is still classified as 'body found' and we are not treating it as suspicious."

Ingrassia's widow, Angela Manandhar, said boxers from around the world had been calling since his death. "They are all shocked. Pierre was a teacher to many boxers."

She would not comment on whether Ingrassia had used illegal drugs in the past.

With 20 years of professional experience in Hong Kong, Ingrassia trained more than 6,000 students, including reigning cruiserweight Muay Thai world champion Nathan Corbett. His students included celebrities, bankers and housewives.

"One of his students, now in America, just rang me and said Pierre was a hero to him as he helped him stay away from alcohol," Ms Manandhar said yesterday.

A memorial service would be held in later this month, she said. The couple has a five-year-old daughter.

Ingrassia had two gyms in Hong Kong, including The One Martial Gym in Central, which offered classes in martial arts and fitness training.

His business partner, Sherri Egbert, said martial arts was Ingrassia's life. "He turned martial arts into an art form," Ms Egbert said.

The owner of Andy Muay Thai, Cheng Hing-kwai, said Ingrassia was a household name in martial arts circles.

Another friend, Rick, who knew Ingrassia from his time living on Lamma Island, said he was a "man's man" who you either loved or loathed.

"He had everything to live for and he was very focused on his work, so his death comes as a complete shock," he said.

Another associate from his time on Lamma Island said he had a volatile temper.

ah so its in the 'oldsters' section. I heard from the boxing community that they were surprised its not featured in the lamma forum. He was only 45. What a way to go (Villa Victoria). I feel so sad for his daughter & ex-wife, Angela. That SCMP was quite cold in its reporting but then its just trying to sell newspapers....

Not knowing this guy I just wondered how bad tempered he was? A bad tempered martial arts expert sounds like a Wanchai nightmare.

Beat's the hell outta being found in an alley NEAR the Villa Victoria.

(sorry).

He often lost control of his temper and reacted in violent and inappropriate ways.

I hope that's not seen as a "hack job". No brag, just fact.

BTW, the Villa Victoria is very nice. They got statues in the entryway an' shit.

BBChris, there but for the graces of the goddesses, go I.

I'd rather Go Out in bed, even alone than outside.

You gotta chuckle (uncomfortably) or else you'd cry.

Yep, I remememember.

Nice poem Dick. So how do you know about the statues at Villa Victoria?

Pierre's funeral will take place on Monday, 31 March, at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point. You may come to bid farewell 4 - 5pm. The ceremony will commence at 5pm.

This will be followed by a wake in Dublin Jack from 8pm onwards.

any news about the cause of death?
I find it hard to believe that he checked into a love hotel alone. Was he given Roypnol and then robbed, as it happens all too often in Wanchai?

My condolences to Angela.

The police said it was "not suspicious". Which means they don't think he was the victim of a crime. Other than that, who knows.

It's a mystery that needs to be solved. If a top class athlete and trainer can perish in a 'love hotel' what chance for normal guys. Are there no CCTV cameras in these Wanchai places?

as far as i remember, there is no CCTV...but mind you, i was always intoxicated when i checked in. They don't ask for ID, you pay for the time you intend to stay, and then leave when time is up. People can easily come and go from your room, if you let them.
I slept at VV alone only once, as i was too drunk and tired to catch a sampan...and i was asked if i expected someone to join me later. I guess they don't see many people checking in alone.
But Pierre could have taken a taxi home, as he was no longer living on Lamma...so i find it hard to believe that he went to VV alone. As i said, it's easy for people to slip in and out of your room there.

Was there a verdict by a coroner or somebody into the cause of Pierre's death. It is quite a while since his mysterious passing in a Wanchai 'love hotel'.

It’s almost 13 years since Shihan passed away; I cannot forget one of my best karate Sensei & the advanced techniques he taught me.
I am forever grateful.
I will never forget seeing him teaching, with kama, a Shorinji Ryu kata to a 6Y old. A piece of art!
Montana lost more than a father.
Not only he passed away but mud poured up with even a “heart attack” story. So sad.
“Heart attack” seriously? On the Friday evening before, we were sparing seriously (for obvious reasons before Hanshi’s visit)
& the punches & kicks I got did not exactly spell “heart attack” from an “out of shape” Shihan / Ajarn fighter.
They were powerful and what I would expect in such situation.
While mud poured on his name, some forgot a) he was Ajarn & b) some earlier sportive events.
RIP Pierre
