I just got this very very sad news, relayed from Nick the Bookman:

Pinky just died in her burning house in China. That's all we've heard so far. No details about what happened exactly, why the house burnt down and if somebody else was there as well.

I couldn't reach the caretaker at her Lamma home or her closest friends to confirm or deny this news yet, so I can't be really sure if it's true or not or just another crazy Lamma rumour.

Does anybody know more about it and can confirm or deny this news from some trustworthy direct sources?

I hope so much that this is misinformation or rampant rumour. If not, please could someone let me know when and where any service may be held -- I'd like to be there, if not in body, then definitely in spirit.

Email from a former tenant and current neighbour of Pinky's. I've asked about the rumour:

"I'm afraid it's true. I asked Nick the Book to pass on the message to you - because I knew you're her friend, and also because I don't know a lot of her drinking buddies, and I thought you would be the best way to let them all know.

Mind you, Amar Singh at Spicy was told, so that should also take care of that. In any case, its been almost 48 hours, so i'm sure even the Pak Kokkers know by now....

It was all a bit of a shock really - in fact, Pinky's family is next door right now, extremely sad and bewildered, with no idea where to start.

If you're interested, the funeral is this coming Tuesday in Panyu. Ferry and bus. Need China visa. Will know more details later today, I think."

please pass on any info ASAP if you find out about funeral, especially if visa is needed. (Anyone know .. do permanent residents need ID?) We should really have some sort of wake/commeration for her at Lamma, perhaps at Spicey's, where I saw her last month or so swatting at Amar Singh

For all her quirkiness, Pinky was a gem: an uncut diamond in the rough and a true Lamma icon, irreplaceable for anyone who has ever come in contact with her, however briefly. If she accidentally went up in flames, I would consider it her true karma, a release from her mental and physical bondage, an immolation closest to a holy cremation. I hope and pray Pinky's soul rests in peace now and forever!

Jeny and Martin Evan-Jones:

"Martin and I are extremely upset to hear the news of Pinky's death, she was indeed, a very vibrant and colorful character, and will be a sad loss to Lamma.community and friends.

We would be very grateful if anyone knows if any arrangements have been made for her funeral, or indeed, a wake, so that we can pay our respects."

I'm hoping to put together a little tribute for my friend Pinky in the Lamma-zine Blog very soon, but I need more input from people who knew her better and longer than I did:
stories, photos, tributes, farewell messages, anything worthy of the truly unique individual that was Pinky...

The first stories are coming in already...

Re-reading some of the many messages about Pinky in these forums makes me sad and smiling at the same time...

The best-ever topic probably was "Pinky Chan rules":

OK, the wake has been announced on the home page.

Still looking for Pinky photos and stories for a tribute next week.

A service will be held somewhere in HK, probably in the 2nd half of next week. The ashes will come back from China via Shenzhen on Tuesday.

How charmingly exquisite! It reminds you of the outwashed
engravure that we used to be blurring on the blotchwall of his
innkempt house. Used they? (I am sure that tiring chabelshovel-
ler with the mujikal chocolat box, Miry Mitchel, is listening) I
say, the remains of the outworn gravemure where used to be
blurried the Ptollmens of the Incabus. Used we? (He is only pre-
tendant to be stugging at the jubalee harp from a second existed
lishener, Fiery Farrelly.) It is well known.

I've got several complaints from people who couldn't find the wake in Spicy Island, calling and emailing me about it. I spent quite some time last night to find out what went wrong.

Even Amar Singh claimed not to know anything about a wake when asked by several ladies looking and waiting for a long time for the wake to start. So they went back home, especially after they heard Amar Singh make some really rude comments about Pinky, one of his best-ever customers.

But it looked obviously like a completely normal evening in Spicy Island, people eating and a few gwailos hanging out at the bar, no sign of any wake anywhere, no picture, no notice, nothing.

Most people were expecting something similar to Ronnie's wake in Spicy not long ago. At least, somebody sitting outside Spicy to inform and invite people in would have been nice. Then the football started after 10:30, ending the "wake" instantly.

I even got blamed personally for this non-event, even though I had nothing to do with organising it. I think that Pinky would have deserved better...

Gone but never to be forgotten. What an incredible woman, barking but absolutely magnificent.

I shall gather the forces of Pinkyism to give her the send off she deserves. So when's the do? Let's make it good.

Probably my favourite picture of Pinky, in the renovated Beer Garden outside the Island Bar, shot on Chinese New Year Eve 2006, after the Donkeys concert, with her human and animal companions, plus her mandatory glass of white wine

Anybody got some Pinky pictures to show us?
Attach them to your email or send them to me for posting!

I'm shocked! I just found out. Pinky will always be remembered by me for being crazy yet political, innovative yet mad. I will always remember the 'bricks thrown at HSBC" incident.
