Little update on the future of the YSW - Pak Kok - Aberdeen ferry service some people were concerned about. The ferry company, Tsui Wah, had to decide recently if they wanted to continue their service beyond July 2011 when their current 3-year tender will be running out.

I had a friendly chat over lunch at the Cultural Melting Pot Festival with Tsui Wah's Ms. Leung. She confirmed that they're willing to continue the service even though their patronage has declined by far more than 10%.

Some good news:
Pending approval from the govt., they're proposing improvements to the now severely limited schedule (no ferry for almost 3 hours in the afternoon, for example, last ferry from Aberdeen at 8:35pm),
plus better connections in YSW to the Central ferry.

Ms Leung also mentioned new staff on this route being better able to communicate in English and air-conditioning for most seats now,
plus some safety upgrades.

Best of all, no fare increases next year!

So, is it time to move to Pak Kok and enjoy the much lower rents and peace and quiet over there (almost no Village House construction and no Sewerage Works)??

Many of you Pak Kok-Aberdeen ferry passengers might have seen the questionnaire Yu Lai Fan's office distributed recently about the schedule.

The results are in and have been handed over to Transport Dept. and Tsui Wah ferry co. already. It looks like we might get a late ferry from Aberdeen, 9:30pm, starting Aug 14 as well, to be confirmed. Overwhelming support for option 2 of the new, revised schedule.

And, even better, no fare increase for the next 3 years!

Here are the detailed questionnaire results, grabbed directly from Yu Lai Fan's office:

New schedule for YSW - Pak Kok - Aberdeen ferry, valid from Aug 15:

11:30am changed to 11:15am; add 3:20pm; and speed up the vessel from 40 to 35 mins!

It's not decided yet to keep the early ferry, as many more people want a late ferry than a very early one. It seems to be a choice discussed right now and you can't have both. From the Transport Dept. - Aug 2011:

"The Transport Department earlier consulted local representatives about their views on the additional return sailing departure from Aberdeen at 10.00 p.m.
We would carefully consider the views to be collected so as to decide if we should take this suggestion of canceling this early morning sailing and we would announce the result later.

<HR>
No news about any late ferries, the latest one from Aberdeen is still at 8:35, even though they had a special late service last Sat night at 10:30pm,
but just for the many Lammaites returning from the National Day dinner for Lammaites in Carnival Seafood Rest.

We took the 2nd of two even later special HKKF ferries from Aberdeen straight to Yung Shue Wan last Sat night. They used the old ferries that were in service on that route before Tsui Wah took over the Aberdeen ferry service....

New Aberdeen ferry schedule from this Monday, Feb 20.

Basically the same as before, but no more 5:20am ferry from YSW, plus an additional, much-requested 10pm ferry from Aberdeen, finally!

The late ferry will be on only on weekdays, but not on Sundays and public holidays, when the last ferry from Aberdeen will remain at 7:55pm!
