Govt criticised over support for ferries
11-07-2011

Legislators have criticised the government for a lack of help for the ferry operators which run the six major outlying island routes. But during a Legco Transport Panel meeting, the Undersecretary for Transport, Yau Shing-mu, said the adminstration had spent about HK$120 million on measures to reduce the operating costs of the companies.

A People Power legislator, Albert Chan, said the measures would not solve the operators long-term financial difficulties.

A kind of indirect subsidy went into effect today and will last for the entire rest of this year:
The MTR installed an Octopus credit machine in the ferry pier(s), $1.50 credit, but ONLY if you take the MTR the same day.

This was a concession the MTR was kind of "forced" into to get heir latest, small fare increase approved, a special $1.50 discount for Outlying Islands ferry passengers who take the MTR after their ferry ride.

I'm still kind of surprised that there was absolutely no visible opposition to the 11-12% fare increase on Lamma ferries, starting two weeks ago.

Fortunately, the YSW-Aberdeen-Pak Kok ferry will keep their existing fares, no increase at all, when their contract continues on Aug 14.

Boss, see Lamma-zine ferry story on the home page.

Basically, it'll be Option 2 of Yu Lai Fan's questionnaire, I think:

But without the 5:20am ferry and an additional late ferry around 9:30pm.

But this is all not confirmed yet, pending Transport Dept.'s decision and official announcement soon.

Does that mean nobody from Lamma wants to arrive at Aberdeen at 0555 in the morning?

Thanks LG

That's what I wondered, if it was confirmed yet, since we will be away if the changes are made. You always seem to be the first to know these things!

Many thanks :)

It's easy to be one of the first to know these things.
I don't rely on the grapevine or rumours, but simply ask the original, official source of the info directly, in this case HKKF or our local politicians negotiating directly with HKKF about these issues.
They're usually quite quick to reply and eager to let customers and residents know the news (and take credit if it's good news).
