Not a very good shot, but my first attempt at lightning.
Was taken this afternoon.
I'd worked out how to do nightime stuff, but the daytime stuff is more difficult.

Yet another justification for my logging on to this web site every day :) . This new thread certainly has possibilities.

There have been some spectacular lightning photos published over the years, and I have often wondered how much of it is really good luck and a superb sense of timing ... either that or leave the shutter open and hope for the best.

Oh, I guess you can't do very long exposures in daylight. So what's the magic formula ... a really, really small f-stop?

Biggest HK thunderstorm of the year so far last night, thousands of lightning strikes within 2 hours, according to the Observatory, quite a few of them hitting the Lamma Power Station.
This is the only OK shot I got from my rooftop, out of over 270 photos. 1 second, -2.0 exposure setting).

Who's got better lightning-over-Lamma photos (and tips on how to take better night-lightning photos), please?

Here's a much better photo, 2 years ago, probably the best lightning photo in our long-running Lamma Photo of the Day gallery so far. Show us your best shots from last night!

Wow! Kevin's shot is spectacular. I missed that when it was originally posted. Thanks L-G.

I still have not managed to get a lightning photo, but thunderstorms are quite rare around here. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Not so rare around here. It's the next morning and the occasional lightning and rumbling is still going on. More thunderstorms in the next few days...

Here is the data from the HK Observatory for "cloud to ground" and "cloud to cloud" strikes last night.

Cloud-Ground strikes - Cloud-Cloud strikes:

16:00-16:59: 2286 - 890
17:00-17:59: 1529 - 284
18:00-18:59: 663 - 258
19:00-19:59: 237 - 111
