The website was down has nothing to do with late payment as it is auto-debited from my visa card. The following is the message from the hosting company in case anybody is interested (doubt if any!):
At about 2:47 pm on August 5, 2004, American Internet lost its primary connection to the Internet. All of the Web sites were affected by this outage, which was eventually traced to a problem with UUNET's data transport. The problem was fixed, but the resulting down time was, to us, unacceptable.
Our plans to prevent such catastrophic occurrences from completely isolating our servers are being modified and accelerated to bridge the next outage. For example, we will be working with MCI/UUnet in the next few months to work out the establishment of a stand-by connection to the East coast.
Update: Major network outage 14:45 PST 8/5/04
Due to equipment failure within UUNET's network fabric, our network connectivity to the Internet was interrupted between 2:45pm 08/05 PDT and 12:00am 08/06 PDT. Like many failures of this type, there wasn't a single failure that caused the extended outage, but a cascade of failures.
You will not lose any e-mail, except spam. All waiting email should be delivered to our servers by 8 AM PDT.
We apologize for the outage. Our equipment was, and is, functioning properly; the problem was in UUNET's data transport. Aside from verifying our equipment was working and ready for the flood of mail that backed up for eight hours, there was little we could do except wait. Please understand we were down as well, including our mail system and our web site www.amhosting.com.
We worked very closely with UUnet to resolve this problem as quickly as possible.
