most of people from out side, who wants move to Lamma, they have feeling that
Lamma is artistic place, probably expecting to see musicians, music event. etc.
but in fact. Lamma is filled up by most amateur musicians,
most Lamma parties dominated by Irish music. which musically in not high level.
or strumming guitar by 2- or 3 chord. singer are shout.

there were interesting conversation between amateur musician. about G5 chord.
the musician who ( claimed he understand all jazz or blues chord with inversion and tension )
argue about ' inversion of G5 chord'
it's sounds like professional, but in fact how many inversion G5 chord can make ?
if we all know about Chord, we should talk about at least inversion of G7 chord.
is any body able to argue about it in this forum ?

music has to be beautiful. all the music has to be art. we drink , drunk enjoy the music. but not drunk and shout.
music has to be art. has to sound good.
lamma music scene always goes to wrong direction.
because, Lamma people look for noise and drinking
and most of musicians are ' pretending ' to being musician, without proper knowledge and study effort.

By the way, are you called FunkyJazzy because of your musical tastes or because of the condition of your underwear?

I think we should all wind our necks in and try to follow the ways of those Canto Jazz Legends that have held us in thrall with their art over the decades, so we are not shout another time.

Dear Funkyjazzy,
Sorry to hear you're disappointed with the (perceived) lack of a music community on Lamma. In my village, Tai Peng, there are at least a few accomplished and respectable musicians, from rock guitar to electronic to classical. Even as a relative newcomer to this island -- and a quiet, unsocial one at that -- I know of a number of interesting, well-studied, talented musicians who live here.

Sure, there are some 3-chord guitarists, perhaps some other unnamed but highly visible string players who won't be winning any Grammys.. but they are having fun and providing entertainment for those who enjoy it (admittedly, not always me). I think in general people rally around and encourage music makers here, without being so judgemental. That seems more in line with the Lamma spirit to me.

One tends to forget, with the level of media saturation we live in, just how difficult it is to play an instrument at ANY level of skill. We're so used to hearing autotuned, multi-take, error-corrected recordings from people who are already the best of the best. Amateurs (almost) never have the time/resources to commit to getting and staying that good. Heck, even most pros can't get or stay as good as the best of the best.. :-)

Take a second to compare to footballers: the best guy on the HK football team is still an amazing athlete, yet he can't compete with the worst guy in Manchester United... and I'm guessing nobody on Lamma can compete with the best guy on the HK team. You can't really expect to see world cup style matches out on the multi-purpose court, and complain if you don't, right?

Anyway, if you are looking for a higher level art, it would be my pleasure to invite you to the next HKPO concert. I can get you a 10% discount on tickets if any are left. It's some lovely music by Rachmaninoff. PM me if you're interested. Or, enjoy the many great and varied artists coming through for the HK Arts Festival.

Best wishes and good luck finding some musicians you enjoy listening to! If you ever want to help me find a venue in Lamma to perform chamber music, I would be most grateful. It's extremely difficult to organize events where quality musicians can perfom -- and get paid -- which is probably why you don't see too much public high-level performance (shout-out to the bands who played at Lamma Fun Day, I enjoyed it)

Cheers,
Marc the Horn Player
Hong Kong Philharmonic

PS You ask: "in fact how many inversion G5 chord can make"... Well, it's not a Zen koan: If by G5 you mean a triad, there are 3 inversions... There are 4 for a G7 chord. You add an extra tone to the chord and thus have one extra inversion. There isn't anything to argue about, but if you have any questions about inversions or tensions I'd be happy to answer them (or consult my girlfriend, who has more rigorous jazz studies under her belt, and can play a mean jazz trumpet despite being a classical horn player... speaking of talented lamma residents!)

One of the pleasures of living in Tai Peng is to hear the mellow tones of a French horn drifting through the evening calm. The question of whether or not it is really art does not keep me awake at night.

D'you know, I'd go with Fractal's opinion, and I can't even play any instruments, but hey man, I love the sounds of Lamma!

Great musicians the lot of 'em!

If you Lamma guys don't play, then we don't get to enjoy the sounds, have the fun and wallow in the truly great ambiance when you do put on some stuff.

Hey JunkyFazzy, why don't you consider moving to DB?
