Deborah Hosking {L_WROTE}:
Greetings Lammonians!

I lived on Lamma island and in HK for an all-too-short eight years; some of you Old Lamma Hands will probably remember me from the days of the infamous Corner Bar.

In the summer of 1989, following the Tiananmen "Incident," there was a song that became very popular in Hong Kong. It was in Mandarin, a woman's voice, very melodic, and the word was that it was from some mainland movie that was popular at the time. Somehow the words of the song became very moving to Hong Kong people in the wake of the massacre and it was on the radio a lot.

I never knew the name of the song (if there was one) in English, and I can't remember the Chinese or the artist's name or the name of the movie -- if I ever knew them. I am trying to track it down now to use it as the sound track for a film I doing for a class I am taking. (I have a lot of old Super 8 footage from that time period that I am having converted to digital format.)

If ANYONE can help me by providing any clues, links anything, it would be a big help. I am hoping that some Hong Kong musician might remember such trivia, and where better to find one than Lamma Island.

I miss you all. Even the ferry.

That's a late-80's/early-90's canto-pop trivia quiz!!

Anyway, the song title is 「血染的風采」, which has been translated as "Blood-stained Spirit" or "Honourable Bloodshed". It was originally recorded for a movie about the war between Mainland China and Vietnam that took place in 1979. Of course, it took on a whole new life during the protests leading to the events of June 4, 1989. There are a number of renditions of the song. But unfortunately, I can't remember who recorded the version Deborah mentioned specifically.

For those wishing to refresh their memories of the incident, you may view this clip on You Tube. I think the version used in the clip was sung by Anita Mui Yim-fong.

I remember now. The singer is 王虹 (Wang Hong)!
