Has anyone been to Bali recently? Some kind soul's sending me there on a business trip in May, so I thought I'd take a week's holiday. But I've not been there since 1992 and even then I wasn't too healthy.

Any suggestions welcome.

I remember white-water rafting down the Ayung River as part of a business trip (team building exercise), one of my most treasured memories of my regional expat days.

They put me in the center of the rubber boat to keep it stable...

No, it's the weekend of the 15th at the Conrad, Nusa Dua. And nothing to do with blindness, unless you're really unlucky. It's a wavefront-guided LASIK surgery conference that I've been reporting on for the past 8 years - the first was in Singapore 3 days after 9/11 and half the speakers failed to arrive.

Wavefront guided??

It's the same technology as that used to map the moons of Saturn. It uses radiowaves and detects irregularities in the reflected wavefront to measure the elevation. It's also used to map the topography of the cornea, which then guides the laser ablation in the human eye to correct visual aberrations, both lower and higher order.

Wow! I only just understood the complxity of the Cornea after watching that guy on CNN that had a 3D map of it. Fantastic. It looks like a corn field. I think mine has got a crop circle in it though.

I should add that about half of these refractive surgeons still wear specs, probably because the procedure hasn't been around that long, so noboby knows about long-term safety.

I got my first pair of specs 6 months ago. It sounds like I better stick with them rather than try new fangle treatments.

If you are aged over 40-45, you're probably presbyopic and need lenses for reading. There's a very interesting corneal implant in development for presbyopia. Meanwhile, I'd stick with the specs.
