I'm pleased, and somewhat mystified, to say that the day following my rant complaining about the insufferable 8 months of noise and cement dust, it ceased. The messy part of the slope works in the Tai Peng New Village appears to be complete. Was it coincidence or did someone in charge take pity on me after reading my rant and give Tai Peng a break.

Anyway, yes, the air is much better now, and clearly superior to that of Central and Aberdeen. There's simply no comparison.

It's interesting to read the posts about the snottiness of Lammaites and how they look down their noses at non believers....

The first time that I visited Lamma was before the big gwailo migration and it was at that time considered a fairly well kept secret. The inhabitants were probably higher brow than the waves that followed and were extremely proud of their situation. It reminded me a bit of 'The Beach' and I felt that I was in a tropical Chelsea.

I left the island when the head butters took over in the mid 90s but have seen how it has calmed down since then and that the 20 somethings are now 40 somethings with children and dogs. Looking back at Lamma from the faraway land of England I'd say that most 40 somethings over here are living pretty sedate and mediocre lives and it's the property market and the dull grind that keeps them in line. The resident Lamma survivors seem to be living blessed lives and although there may be cliques which are a part of the [British] culture on Lamma, the social activity, connections and opportunities are far beyond thoses of the average forty something Surrey dweller. Many ex-Lammaites feel that they are a Lammaite for life and that although they may be on the other side of the world, they are still one of the clan and are very proud to be so!
