We've been thinking about a chat room, but were wondering about the size of the audience.

People check in here at any time, over a 100 every day, but we rarely have more than a handful of people online at the very SAME time, which is mandatory for a chat room.

That's why our forum format works so well, it gives people time to check in at any time, from work, at lunch, after midnight. People can respond anytime they like, think about their messages first, formulate them nicely, add pictures, smileys and formatting, etc. Like e-mail, in fact. No need to wait for more people to show up online to start a live chat.

A forum is so different from chatting online which is more often superficial, not too interesting and flirtatious. I know, I use ICQ as well and it can be much fun! But if people on Lamma want to chat, why not just meet in the pub or call on the phone? Posting messages is a very different medium...

Let's ask our audience in good democratic fashion, as we're always very eager to hear suggestions from our readers. We'll try to realise most of the good ones, of course!

I should stop acting like the mouse in "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" and be gracious of what the forums have to offer. My other half is a webapp person, so I should know better to appreciate the good work you guys have done instead off keep asking for more.

I just wish I still lived on Lamma :cry:

Yes, I think so too.

However I run yahoo messenger most of the time and very often am chatting to other overseas board members like AutumnAubern or other friends while reading or making posts here and working at the same time.

I've got a 24/7 connection so I just keep a browser window open for each forum or chat room in the background.

If Jeannie finds a good thread she sends the link by YM which beeps and vice-verca. Also I'm logged in to a web help forum most of the time too, and my help desk.

Cheshire K@'s can do several things at once. It's called multitasking. :mrgreen:

Anyway I don't think it would be appropriate to use these forums to chat as threads would be like this one eg.

K@ : Hi

AA : Hi

K@ : what u doin

AA : nothing brb

K@ : k

AA : I'm back

K@ : did your boss come?

Etc Etc.

Also it would take ages to get responses.

Generally chat and message boards work very well together as long as you can walk and chew gum at the same time LOL.
