The campers do make a mess, and some of them have been pretty noisy as well. It's not just during golden week. There have been tents on the beach several times since then, including last night. The lifeguards are actually pretty swift at moving them off the beach in the morning, which I suppose is the best they can do (along with the completely useless signage). Given the unlikelihood of the relevant department stationing a supervisory workforce down there every night, I wonder what can realistically be done to stop people camping there at night, now that the floodgates have been opened. Any ideas?

Well, in the true HK spirit, let's start charging them for it!

An easy way to make some spare change for somebody living close to HSY Beach.
Put up a trilingual sign with a per person, per night camping charge and start collecting money.

Hassle them gently in creative, but non-violent ways if they refuse to pay up.

Hmm.... what are these 'creative, but non-violent ways' of which you speak? And is their purpose truly to deter?

I humbly leave it to our creative forum members to come up with the "creative, but non-violent ways" to get the campers to pay up.

But the purpose of these ways would not be to deter them but to get them to pay up as much as possible for their camping.
That would deter them from coming back or recommend the beach for camping to their friends.

I did see lots of campers early in the month, but none the last week, at least when I'm there from 6-7 pm.
But they'll probably be back next holiday weekend.

The police station is still just above the beach, but they don't care.

It would be ridiculous to have LCSD staff overnight to just move on campers, especially when the lifeguards clock off before 6pm, while there are still often dozens of people in the water.
They don't enforce the rules plastered all over the place during the daytime anyway.
The most absurd must must be the no-smoking signs in the showers. Or those telling you you can't smoke in the swimming area. No to mention the other idiotic signs, like the ones telling you the way to the beach, actually on the beach.

There used to be a great sign at the beach, which sadly has now gone: 'When the sea waves occur, do not near the submerged rocks'.

I have also noticed an increase of camping on the power station beach. Many people build fires that leaves charcoal all over the beach. You know all that looks fun but to get cranky about it, it just adds up to more and more non-residents pouring onto the island to take advantage of a "free" situation OR to have their "beach raves" that just pump more noise into the air - just what I want, the thump-thump of disco when I sit on my roof in the evening.

A photo sent to me yesterday: Camping inside the Pak Kok ferry pier, shot in the morning by Marcus while the residents were probably still sleeping:
