Had the adventurous British never secured that lengthy land lease on HK and the Red Guards marched all over Lamma I wonder what the rents on Anton's island would be like now. Rather affordable I reckon.

Historical hypotheticals could go on for ever. I guess, though, that they are ultimately not very illuminating, even if they are a fun way of passing long winter evenings.

The rent for a much better village house in Nansha, Guangzhou, which is one hour away from Central by ferry, is merely 1500-2000 RMB. Full infrastructure, subway directly to Guangzhou, hassle-free immigration facilities when going to HK, cheaper living and more.

But would you want to live there? I wouldn't.

For instance, say Lee's forces succeeded in defeating general Meade, by capturing Culp hill, and used it to rain down a barrage of hot molten goo on the Union forces.

Or if Quebec won their oui independence in 1995, would Quebec have separated.

I particularly love to live in the alternate history where The Calgary Flames have won the Stanley cup in 2004, if that "Maradonna"like controversy of a disallowed goal was allowed.

Or if Pinky had not transported Chunking Mansion hippies to Lamma and encouraged backpackers to extend their stay in HK.

Let's not blame Pinky (may she rest in peace), or ChungKing Mansions, for the low-life scum that has always been a part of modern Lamma life ok...
