Hello Everyone!

My wife and I are recent transplants to Hong Kong now living in Yung Shue Wan. As we're just starting to build our new life here, one of the things I'm still working out is a new way of cooking. We're from the northwestern coast of the US and the vegetables and seafood available to me here are quite different than what I had access to there.

I am the cook for my little family and, if I do say so myself, I'm not bad. I am excited about exploring this new culinary paradigm. I'm looking for any favorite recipes that call on foods specific to this region or any general suggestions from the professional and family cooks here on the island.

Thanks folks!
Kevin

Why not try a site like epicurious.com, that lets you enter search queries based on ingredients?

indeed I could do that, I guess I was just hoping to use this as a method of meeting some of the other people in my community who share my interest in cooking.

A good person to ask is Ivy (veggie shop, first on left when you leave the ferry pier. She'll explain what the vegetable is and often offer a suggestion for cooking it Chinese style. For example, Chinese celery (looks like a slimmer version of Western) is great in soups and is also much cheaper than the heavy Western style heads. Not really any good as a crudite, though since it's too soft.

Can't give you much advice on seafood. Don't like the stuff.

Good luck! :D

Sorry, I have just noticed you mentioned meeting like-minded people. Pondering over a variety of veggies from Ivy's often turns into a chat with another customer about who is cooking what tonight. I've had some good suggestions doing that! :D
