I see a new play 'Filth' is coming to Hong Kong, exploring expat life. Love this description of the characters.

'The play's four main characters are all friends from Britain who decide to start new lives in Hong Kong.

There's Joe, an American banker and wannabe poet and his wife Rebecca, a Eurasian editor of a fictional paper called the Hong Kong Enquirer whose father was a media mogul and has just died.

Their friends are Ricky, a pot-smoking Australian radio presenter who lives on Lamma Island, and Elaine, a Londoner who doesn't really want to be in Hong Kong but has come along for the ride.'

lol Lamma is typecast again!

For those few who don't know:
Filth = Failed In London, Try Hongkong,
Used to describe British economic migrants here last century.

Not necessarily British Alan. Just those who worked in cosmopolitan London. But you knew that.

That's what "Failed in London" implies.

Just my wild guess:
Paul Booth is British, but not from cosmopolitan London, so he dislikes the stereotyped FILTH label?

It's not actually true of course. Hong Kong (particularly places like The Peak, Mid Levels, Stanley, Red Hill, Repulse Bay) is stuffed full of senior bankers who are deliberately avoiding the UK's high tax rates. It's only a 12 hour flight if they get home sick. It was not true at the turn of the last century either. If you were not well connected the best place to try your luck was the colonies. I guess though that it was the aristocratic black sheep who mostly deserved the epithet.
