Has anyone got any leads on where to find Christmas trees in HK (and I don't mean pinching them Alan)?

ask the lady (ah-ying) who sells vegetables outside Lamma Bistro in the morning. she might be able to get you one at a good bargin. otherwise, you have to go the "gardens" around in hongkong. i know there's one in pokfulam just outside wah-fu estate that has plenty of christmas trees for sale each year.

Does it have to be a fir tree?

I grew up with only real fir trees at Christmas, never even considering a plastic tree, but this is a different culture and we should adapt.

How about putting some lights (not blinking ones and DEFINITELY no music! Yuck!) on any tree or bush in your garden or on the potted plants on your balcony or rooftop (if you're so lucky to have one)?

That's what I'll be doing, very cheap, but festive.
Plus some non-plastic wreath & fir branches from Main Street, a few (hand-made) candles and the festive mood will appear by itself...
