There'll be a yearly Snake dinner for Lammaites, next Thursday, Jan 21, 7:30pm in Central, close to Lamma ferry pier. Ideal for the cold winter weather as snake is supposedly very "warming".

This is being organised by the District Council and subsidised by the govt. Lamma-Por and I have been attending every year and this year we have reserved an entire table of 12. Unexpectedly, we're now still missing 3 people to fill our multinational table. Anybody interested? PM me!

$130 per person, to be confirmed and paid for by tomorrow, Fri afternoon.

There'll be at least 150+ Lammaites, an entire floor of the specialised snake dinner restaurant, 8 courses, about 3 of them with snake, snake wine included.
You’ll meet fellow Lammaites, especially local families, the Silent Majority, people you rarely ever see in restaurants or out in the evenings on Main Street.

Hi L-G, do you know what kind of snake and where the meat comes from? It is either from further south or you all will be eating frozen snake as most have been inactive here for quite awhile.

Can you find out for me?

OK, I'll ask them on the night.

But if it's frozen meat I doubt that they'll admit to that, with all the emphasis on how healthy and "warming" snake is in the Chinese diet. It's usually eaten only in winter months, supposed to be fresh, and usually claimed to originate in Southern China. I see your point and will ask.

Anybody wants to come along? Deadline for booking is today.

Anything organised by the District Council and subsidised by the Government that doesn't involve snake? A good hot pot perhaps for fellow Lammaites?

There's actually a wide range of activities organised for Lammaites, heavily subsidised by govt. But they're usually announced only in Chinese and happen on week days during the day, attracting families, house wives and the elderly.

Besides very popular events like the Around-Lamma cruises two years ago, they include off-island excursions to the Lantau Buddha, Tsing Mah bridge or Wetland Park, always with a nice lunch and all transportation and guide included, all at nominal cost, like $50 or so. Usually promoted mainly by word of mouth, the little Chinese-only posters are easy to miss on Lammadonna's office windows or the Rural Committee building besides the Policebox. I've joined a few excursions over the years and reported back in the Lamma-zine. You meet a lot of very nice local people on these tours.

The other, larger festival-type events are happening on weekends, often in the Football Pitch, promoted in big banner posters along Main Street, occasionally with some English wording added. I make a serious effort to translate, announce and promote the major events via the Lamma Events Calendar and in occasional stories.

I think I will pass, but thanks.

I look forward to hearing what you find out. If you could take a few measurements (length of body, type of teeth) and maybe grab a few tissue samples, too, I would be grateful. :)

Nancy, they confirmed that it was frozen snake from Southern China, 3 different species, from very dark to white meat. Pretty tasty, not too tough.

Sorry, no tissue samples for you. But after cooking them in soup for a long time they might not be well-suited for any detailed analysis. I don't remember ever examining any cooked tissue samples in my biology lab work at university...

Fortunately, there were no snake teeth in the dishes, but lots of tiny bones. The snake wine was pretty nice, too!

Yes, must have been. Did they tell you what the species were? I would love to know.

Glad you didn't swallow a tooth.

Yes, that would be an unusual way to die, from a snake bone or tooth getting stuck in my throat instead of being bitten!

The names of the snake were getting lost in translation, they only knew one or two of the Chinese names. Ask Lammadonna's female assistant, she organised the whole event; she's very friendly, cheerful and the only one in that office speaking English quite well.

It was kind of a speed-eating dinner, 8 courses in 60 minutes and then people were rushing off to the ferry back to Lamma. We didn't even have time to finish the single bottle of snake wine per table. The first year when I wasn't the only gwailo at the event, bringing along a few friends.

This year's snake banquet for all Lammaites, organised by Outlying Islands Women's Association, headed locally by Yu Lai Fan, I think.

The venue is in walking distance from the Central ferry pier in a specialised cooperative association rest., $200 each.
Tickets from Yu Lai Fan's office on Main Street #72, just besides the Lamma Gourmet.

Search for "snake banquet" at the top of the home page for photos of earlier banquets.
Each table will have a bottle of (pretty nice, in my own experience) snake liquor.
