Quite a bit like "Lamma time".
If you arrive on time to an event, you might be the first guest.
Add 15-30 mins at least to any starting time, sometimes 1 hour or even more...

Hello everybody!

We just wanted to give a little update on the Reggae party.

So we plan to start around 16:00. Please bring your tent and beach towels or carpet to relax and lay down with your friends and listen to some awesome reggae music! If your coming from Hong Kong island, you can just sleep on the beach, thats no problem as this beach is no public beach.
Well try to organise some beach volleyball and/or other activities. If anybody has some suggestions for beach activities, please share it right here.
On the 22nd well arrange some route signals so you know exactly where to find power station beach.
If you want to do a little live performance; sing with your guitar, do a dance body-painted red yellow and green, walk on your hands while... Let us know and well turn the music down for your special performance at a certain time smile emoticon
We will have several DJ's performing and the great artist, DJ and singer Gesco les Fils du Noir will do a performance at around 9pm. I just finished his music video for his new super groovy song. You can watch it here and probably see some familiar faces:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S3MDTE1LP8
We will try to arrange some more performances. Please let us know if you know people that would like to perform too. Anything is possible.
A very important last thing we want to mention:
LETS KEEP IT CLEAN GUYS!
We will put several garbage bags down on the site. Please please use them. You can BYOB but please take care of your rubbish. Also on that special moment when you decide to run naked into the ocean with a bottle of Jamaican rum! Don’t trash it in our beautiful ocean. Just put out your "cigaret" in the sand and put the but in your pocket. Its really important to us to keep it natural and don’t make a mess. We live on Lamma and want to keep our island clean for everybody to enjoy. Thanks.
So thats it for now, more info will follow. Lively up yourself! Don’t shoot a sheriff. And Bombaklat to you all! :))

Hi all,
Great news - the guys (and gals) from Lamma Island Pale Ale will be selling their excellent ice cold beers during the reggae festival - which are brewed on Lamma Island!!!
We're still looking for more performers / activities / dancers etc etc - so if you can do something cool, please let us know smile emoticon
As mentioned before, please keep an eye on your littering/waste etc. we'll provide bins & bags of course.
We'll arrange a seperate area on the side of the beach where you can put up a tent if you're planning to camp.
Starting time is around 16.00 on powerstation beach (yung shue wan side) until noon the next day. Entrance is free. Bring your own drinks & smokes etc.
Thanks!!
Mark, Oswin & Jake

Yes, just notice that it's a Private event and you need to be invited to it. But everybody is welcome! I'll let them know...

From the FB page:

22 August at 16:00 to 23 August at 12:00

Calling all Reggae lovers! Looking for something to do on Saturday night? Then get your ass down to Power Station Beach on Lamma Island for a fun filled night of Reggae and come celebrate the birthday of one of the coolest cats on Lamma, Jay sharp.

All are welcome and the event is FREE and BYOB. Love locally brewed beer? The guys and gals from Lamma Island Pale Ale will be selling their delicious ice-cold beers during the festival, so bring some mullah.

There will be a separate area on the beach for tents, so for those of you who don’t reside on Lamma but want to dance well into the night, bring a tent/towel/blanket to sleep in/on. There will also be signs to the beach from the pier, so keep an eye out when you get off the ferry.

MUSIC

We will have several DJ's performing and the great artist, DJ and singer Gesco les Fils du Noir will do a performance around 9pm. You can check out his new music video here:

From Marckq Schmidt:

"Thanks all for coming!
We were overwhelmed with the super big turn up! 400+ people at one point, 7 DJs, 2 bars - 3 food stands and a maaaassive sound system.
We hope everyone had a great time, but by the looks of it you all did."

Any more photos from some of the other 400+ party-goers?

Lamma Reggae Festival #2 - July 9, 2016

Review by Nick the Bookman

Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night. Feisty old Margo Channing. Had a way with words she did. Still does anytime you want to watch or re-view "All About Eve". Anyway, it's all about the eve(ning) as I stroll down to Power Station Beach for the overnight sensation that is the Lamma Reggae Festival. Fine sunspliffsplash carnival sounds. Up against a stormy bruised purple dusky twilight sky with what will prove to be the biggest storm to form over Lamma this year. Groovealicious melodies versus a Gotterdammerung tempest. Should be fun...

I've got down to the beach about 1900ish. A lot of work has been done in the past seven hours under a broiling sun to erect the three day temporary village. There's a dance stage and a large semi-protected DJ booth area. Some other tents where food is available and shelter from the forthcoming storm. Good crowd as well. About 300 or so at a semi-experienced guess. A couple of controlled bonfires. Oz is playing as I arrive. A nice, not too heavy, selection of digital soul/reggae tracks with cool percussion and rampant horns. The vibes are friendly. Frasier has now taken over. More of a dancehall vibe. Taking the pace up a notch. Good version of "Children Of The Revolution". It's the first time I've heard Frasier DJ and it's a very enjoyable (if anonymous) set. Smooth control of the laptop and it's not essential to have seamless mixing skills. The Fun Factor is Omni-present. Graham follows on from Frasier and kicks the tempo up a bit more. Lots of little echo FX and twisted touches. Quite a few people are doing a fine job of dancing in the sand dunes. The light show is quite trippy as well. Bands and ringlets of lysergically glowing fairy lights / Twisting and fractalising and melting in and off bodies. Like watching small pets rollicking and tumbling around in a happy blur. Tangles of coloured Splats!

Quick word from near neighbour Craig who has been among those suffering and sweating like Spartans and doing all the heavy grunt construction work. My name is Craig and the Lamma Fire is HOT! It's up to you all to show what you've GOT! The fire breathers are the closest thing we've got to the dragons from "Game Of Thrones". One poor neophyte doesn't expel the fluid far enough and gets a minor blowback into his mouth. Not seriously injured though. The balls of fire erupt intermittently and a few embers set a small clump of grass ablaze near where I'm lying. Two small handfuls of sand later and the "conflagration" is extinguished. There was no danger at all. Truth, not modesty. And Water has turned up on the small stage for a digital sitar demonstration. Coupled with a protobeatbox and FX, the sound is a weirdly pleasant and musically appealing drone cycle. Lots of fun and lots of applause. Water should have sent over some of his photos of the night (and other gigs). Hopefully some of them are gracing this story.

Following on from Water is FLAWLESS (aka Alex Sinclair). He does a wonderful short set of finely crafted raps and tunes. Ossy, the DJ is also brilliant. After a brief false start when Alex doesn't get his beats on time. The set called "Mas O Menos" include an instrumental freestyle track called "Welcome to Samrock". Plus an almost ballad called "One Time To Shine" and a couple of variants of a track called "Pimping Ain't Easy" where Alex makes it sound like the easiest gig in the world. At one point he goes vocal hysteric, spitting out syllables like a cross between a high speed drill and a tobacco auctioneer. The Usain Bolt of rapid rap and a mindfuck to follow. Well worth hearing and a pleasure to chat to. He wrote down that you can find his sonic adventures on Music Channel. http://www.youtube.com/theflawless. Check him out. He's worth it. As everyone who heard him would no doubt agree.

Of the audience, I would guesstimate at least a third are off-islanders. Here for the party and here for the night. The first real test comes about 2230ish when the threatening storm stops threatening and starts storming. A Motherfucker of a Maelstrom. More than 20.000 lightning strikes reported. Top strike rate of this year. The sky is crackling and fizzing. The rains really came down. Visibility is limited and everyone rushed to stop the party and get all the equipment further under cover. The enormous and imaginary superbeing called...(pick your own Deity of choice) is cutting loose on the thunder drums. And his equally fictive underling is fine tuning the whacked out weather lights. Horizon level blocks of sickly yellowish light. Plus mile long splinters of heat light, hotter than the surface of the Sun. Looks like the First Night On The Somme a century ago. Sky splitting noise. Echoing and reverberating around the mountaintops. No way the silent music can compete. And that's when the police arrive and the dreaded incantation is uttered. "We have had noise complaints..."

Now, when I came down to the party a couple of hours earlier, I couldn't hear more than muffle as I was approaching the House On The Power Station Road. They weren't the ones complaining about the noise anyway. I don't know which copper uttered the fateful words. But I'm thinking. Not this lame excuse again. It's trotted out everytime and almost always proves to not be the case. One doesn't wish to hint that the police might be Economical With The Truth, but it seems to be the Catch-All Excuse and how to prove it. Or disprove it. Do the police record all the phone calls they get? I would imagine so. They don't all have to be kept, but a log record would seem to be Standard Operating Procedure. Noise complaints had some substance back in the days of the proto-raves on Hunter's Beach. The "Come on Lamma People..." exhortations from Jimmy the Toaster etc. In those days (last Millennium!) the sound went right across the bay into the open windows of most of Yung Shue Wan Main Street. But, now, the Parties are on the beach and there's still noise complaints...? The police could have varied the routine and said they're concerned about people getting hurt during this huge storm and please shut down and shut up before someone gets crispyfried by an errant bolt. Make them seem more caring and compassionate.

The rain stopped about now and I decided to head back home. So what happened later is hearsay to me. Apparently, the police refused to ID themselves when asked and one also threatened to confiscate all the equipment. And our senior police leader on Lamma seemed unaware of these incidents? Legally, the police must identify themselves if asked. Could this be a bit of unofficial "who will rid me of these turbulent partygoers" sort of vibe? Jim was asking for representatives of The Lamma Book Club to come forward and negotiate. The ones behind this whole party. Eventually, things got sorted out and the party continued , yea verily, unto the wee small hours and the rest of the morning. A well self-regulated event. Do we need smarter more community minded police? Deal with the reality that the party is here. Better kept contained on the beach than shut it down after the last ferry has left and leave people marauding around Main Street all night? Don't think of this as a major rant. I was trying for a more in sorrow than anger vibe.

Lamma Gung has told me that the photos of me with the two charming ladies are a bit of a hit. They were both kind enough to leave me some of their thoughts the following morning. They are Berenice from France (the tall one on the left looking at the photo). And Adi from Israel, the shorter one on the right. So, here in their own write are:
{L_ATTACHMENT}:
Adi-Ticho-IMG_4830-wp.jpg
Adi-Ticho-IMG_4830-wp.jpg [ 149.33 KiB | Viewed 4738 times ]
Berenice: "I just fell in love with this party. Absolutely everything made it magical. The mind-blowing music to make our bodies move through the night and day. I'll be dreaming of this crazy story about monkeys. owls and fireflies and the wah of the fire. The typhoon and sky lightning put on a spell on the island last night". It was Berenice's first time on Lamma and she admits to being pretty much bewitched. "My life is full of magic now". Thank you, Lamma.

Adi: "We are part of The Camping Group. We leave our showers and comfortable beds for the luxury of a small tent every weekend. This is the first time we've come to a Lamma party and we're so amazed by the people and the island vibe. We met a very cool guy(?) with a spade who dug a huge hole so we could store our fruit that we brought with us. There are so many nice people on Lamma that make us feel like one family. We'll come back again and give back the love."

Gary: Gary was the third member of the Camping Group. Here are his thoughts: "We found this island to be an amazing party island. Reggae music. Barbecue. Alcohol, Swimming and camping on the beach. A typhoon, rainstorm and lightning at the same time. We dance and move our bodies. A young French girl (Berenice perhaps?) sent me an email saying that this is the best moment of my life, Gary... It's AMAZING!"

And with that happy observation, it's time to say say sayonara. Until the next event/gig/happening comes rocking and rolling along.

Let's hear from one of the Lamma Reggae Fest organisers, a behind-the-scenes look at the festival.

Lamma Book Club:

I don’t even know where to start. Again – what a party, what a turn up.
I’ll take a few steps back and try to give a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look.

About 1.5 year ago, we were barbecuing on the rooftop of 2 Lamma Book Club members in Pak Kok (Lamma Island), listening to some old-school Dutch Ska/Reggae band named ‘Doe Maar’. We talked about everything and nothing, but somehow started talking about throwing a Reggae party somewhere. Back then we didn’t know anything about throwing parties/festivals – we didn’t own any speakers/generator/audio stuff – we didn’t know how to market something like this, or how to approach any of this, but we agreed that if we did a party and 50 people would show up, it would be a success. Well – that was the start of our first proper big festival on Lamma Island. The 2015 Reggae Festival. We made a Facebook Event, rented all the equipment, asked a few DJs to come and we set up a small booth on the beach and played some music – turn up of 400 people…(!)

Since our first Reggae fest, we organized a big NYE festival, 2 beach cinemas, some smaller beach parties and a massive rave on a secret location.

Fast forward to June 2016. We’re sitting in the Blue Goose Tavern, a few days after the Rave… still a bit hungover and exhausted but all very satisfied. We’re quickly talking about ‘What’s next?’. Something small we agree upon, or not? A reggae festival again? Yes / no / maybe – OK, let’s try it. We recycled the flyer from last year and created a new Facebook Event. July 9th is the date.

We did a shout-out to see if any performers/DJs were interested to join the party and slowly started to plan the stage design. Like always we had to trolley a bunch of pallets to the beach, hunt around for bamboo for building the upwards constructions- moving some plywood to the beach for our stage floor and think about our decorations. We also now know that one of us screams like a girl when he sees a centipede – you can guess who in the Facebook Event comments.

A few weeks before the event we found 3 dragon costumes in the trash on Lamma – and we hung them around the stage. We managed to put a smoke machine in the mouth of one and a laser shooting out of its eyes. I think that worked out pretty well. We also hung a big cinema screen next to the stage with a Lamma Book Club Reggae projection – looked pretty cool right?
We got some cool banners printed that were designed by one of the Book Club – they looked awesome right?
{L_ATTACHMENT}:

Anyway, we built the stage and set up on the 9th after a big beach cleanup (thanks guys!). Apparently it was the hottest July day in the last 50 years. We used up 21 pallets, 19 pieces of bamboo and 8 plywood boards (which we didn’t burn this time). We recycled the plywood boards from our previous NYE festival where they were used for a graffiti workshop.

With help from P and J we got the audio running just before 17:00. The sun was quite intense – but luckily we had 10 big canopies, sponsored by http://www.linksmoving.asia, so people had a bit of shade. We kicked off with some chill good old reggae tunes to set the mood (DJ-ed by the Book Club members themselves!) and were followed up by Walter who was playing some songs on a big ass guitar and Oz Walker (Chic Y Mankee) got the crowd moving!

Next up was Fraser Douglas and by this time more and more people were arriving. He looked at me smiling when he was rocking the tunes and pointed at hundreds of people dancing in front of the stage and said, ‘Is this what you wanted?’ Yes, Fraser – that’s exactly what we wanted!

We had a little surprise planned at 21:00 – and we shut down the music to start reading from a book – hey, we are a Book Club after all! The story was about Monkeys that were stranded on an island and they wanted to make a fire because they were cold. Blablabla – in the end they asked the advice of our Dragon, and the dragon fired up the lasers and smoke. One of the Book Club members was hiding behind the dragon to shake it a bit and to speak in a dragons voice through a megaphone. Well, the megaphone turned out to be out of battery, but he managed to shout out his lungs. Anyhow – The dragon gave advice how to make fire, and the monkeys gave a bit of a fire show to the audience. Hopefully that was successful – looking forward to some comments on it, hehe.

We gave the stage back to the next DJ – Cerberus Collective – but he needed 5 more min to set up. So I saw my chance, and went for it. I told a joke in front of 800 people, and nobody laughed. It’s a solid joke, I will keep telling it to people until I crack some laughs!

Well – then Cerberus pressed Play and started doing what DJ’s do and totally got everybody crazy. This was followed by Chemical Kris and Flawless. AAAAaaaamazing performances! Big big respect to these 2 guys. They got interrupted a bit by the rain, but I think the crowd didn’t mind dancing in the rain.

Then the rain increased and increased and it was pouring – poooooourrring down with the biggest thunderstorm I’ve ever seen. We had to shut down all the equipment and try to save everything. Most of the gear survived, except for the lasers, 4 big disco lights, 1 microphone, and my laptop doesn’t play sound anymore. But luckily that’s all fixable/replaceable. After an hour or so of intense rain, it calmed down a bit and we wanted to start playing music again.

We checked all the gear if it was good enough to start, checked the cables and extension cords to see if nothing was laying in the water and decided it was time to start the generator again. Imagine 5 tired, drunk and wet to the core guys standing around the generator discussing, pointing fingers, and trying to get it going again. We made an attempt to add petrol, but came to a quick understanding that somebody more sober than us should be doing that. Anyway, we ended up not having anyone sober enough and it’s better not to write here what happened - but it involved a fire extinguisher being sprayed empty for no reason, someone covered in petrol and a generator that didn't need refilling in the first place (fuel pump switch).

Long story short - we fired it up again, and Jim and The Groove Thief and co. started rocking the beach with some killer tunes! What a show! Absolutely amazing. They eventually got shut down by the police, but it turned out to be just a warning... we were allowed to continue under a lower volume. 45 minutes later we were shut down again....

Started playing again 1 hour later… got shut down again…. I think in the end it went on until 04:20 in the morning, with a restart around 09:00 in the morning on Sunday, until 18:00 on Sunday evening when the cops came again to say it was over. We were tired, done, hung-over, exhausted, drunk, happy and satisfied anyway, so we took all the gear home, cleaned up the beach and ended with a celebration dinner in Bombay restaurant.

Again – thanks everybody for coming and battling the weather. We had a blast, and we’re pretty sure you did too. Everybody that helped – Ja Bless!

Peace Out!

A little, real-life demo of how old and new media mix on this website:

Upon his request, I printed Nick's review above on paper for him to archive, plus adding The Lamma Book Club's review above as well.

Living an almost completely offline life (no mobile, PC or Internet, except occasional, public-PC Gmail, reserved for typing up reviews and (family) emails), Nick didn't know about the Lamma Book Club's review till he read it on paper at his book stall.

He loved it and wrote up this instant reply in his famous black review book. I took a smartphone picture and uploaded it to this forum, also sharing it on Facebook:
