City Hydroponics will be operating a charity stand at the upcoming Lamma Fun Day, hosting a children's work shop: upcycle a PET bottle into a hydroponic growing bottle, that never needs watering. In addition, it makes it very easy to follow the growth of not just the plant but also to watch the development of the roots inside. A great educational project.

We'll be providing all that's needed to start growing some herb or lettuce or other plant (including the nutrients, and of course all the material to decorate the bottle and make it pretty), except for the PET bottles (any bottle of 1.5-2.5 litres will do) which the participants have to bring themselves. The workshop is free of charge with voluntary donations - the full proceeds of the stand will go to the Lamma Fun Day charity.

For more questions, please contact me at the e-mail above or phone/WhatsApp 6053 6076 or http://www.cityhydroponics.hk

"Dear Lamma-Gung,

My name is Nicole Robinson and I am a Gr. 10 student at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS). This year all Gr. 10 CDNIS students must complete a personal project. The goal of my project is to raise HK$5000+ in donations for Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) - (http://hongkongdogrescue.com/) and Child Welfare Scheme (CWS, the organizer of Lamma Fun Day) - (http://www.cwshk.org/).

To achieve this, I will organize a dog talent show that will be part of Lamma Fun Day, where people will donate to enter their dogs in the show to compete in some fun competitions. I am writing to you in hopes that you would kindly help advertise for the dog show using the attached poster that I have created."

SCMP today:
Lamma Fun Day reaches 16th year as island’s ‘raw’ community spirit continues to flourish

It is kind of raw; Lamma has an organic community who really think they should go the extra mile to make it a better place,” says Zein Williams, chief executive of the Child Welfare Scheme and chief organiser of the island’s 16th annual fun day, organised in aid of schools in Nepal.

“The [islanders] are really laid back and the value of community is important to them,” she says.

Community spirit, not always considered prevalent in Hong Kong, has been hailed as the glue which holds together Lamma’s popular music festival.

More than 60 musicians, including several teenage bands, will perform at the event on Tai Wan To Beach and Power Station Road near Yung Shue Wan on November 12.

An auction where bidders can vie for a range of items including luxury hotel stays, restaurant vouchers and art work, usually proves a key fundraising element, racking up HK$80,000 alone last year, organisers say. They hope to top HK$300,000 this year. A total of HK$2.2 million has been raised for Child Welfare Scheme projects since the festival was launched in 2000.

Avi Rai, project coordinator for the Child Welfare Scheme, says Lamma is so well connected that residents feel more inclined to help those less fortunate than themselves.

“It is a strong community; they are a group of people who really want to do this,” he says. “The community is so secure that they want to give back.”

Jo Wilson, founder of ecological campaign group Living Lamma, which will organise an early morning beach clean-up the day after the festival, agrees that the island’s neighbourly spirit is infectious.

“To make it work, people not only have to have an idea but actually take the time to do it,” she says. “That’s not easy in Hong Kong, but I think on Lamma when people see others putting in the effort, they want to help. [This event] is for a great cause and it really reflects the wonderful community we have here.”

The festival’s music coordinator Dave Wilkinson says the set list alone is sure to create “an epic day out”.

“Our cracking line-up features some of the best music Hong Kong has to offer – from rockabilly to heavy metal and folk to electronica, with lashings of rock in between,” he says.

Scores of festival volunteers will also come together to offer arts, crafts, yoga workshops, beach volleyball, bric-a-brac stalls and food.

There will even be an 8km fun run from the event site to the wind turbine and over the hills to Sok Kwu Wan before looping back to Tai Wan To Beach, the organisers say.

Money raised from the event will go towards a four-year project focused on transforming 48 schools in villages near Pokhara in central Nepal, after former Lamma resident Andrew Doig visited the country and was impressed by Child Welfare Scheme work there. Parts of Nepal are still in significant need of rebuilding after an earthquake last year left almost 9,000 people dead and 22,000 injured. Unicef estimated about 24,000 classrooms were damaged or destroyed in the 7.8 magnitude quake, putting the education of one million children at risk.

Williams says the country’s schools are also severely underresourced and teaching quality needs to be improved.

“The government said they wanted everyone to go to school, but they did not think about how it would work,” she says.

“We reach out to communities to involve parents and promote education, which increases the chances of children attending and staying in schools. Education is also vital to support our anti-human-trafficking work and to make children aware of their rights.”

From Lamma Fun Day organisers:

Lamma Fun Day Beach Music Festival
Saturday 4th November 2017

Don't miss Lamma Fun Day Beach Music Festival on Saturday 4th November 2017 from 11am til 10pm on Tai Wan To Beach near Yung Shue Wan.

More than 15 bands, musicians, singers and DJs will perform on two stages as part of this FREE family-friendly music festival raising money to support Child Welfare Scheme Hong Kong (CWS HK) and its work with children in Nepal.

Lamma Fun Day includes 30+ market stalls, a licensed bar, food stalls, charity auction, magic show, arts and crafts fun, plus beach games and sports for both kids and adults.

This is the 17th Lamma Fun Day organized by CWS HK and volunteers, with the generous support of Lamma Island and Hong Kong businesses, and supported by thousands of Hong Kong residents and visitors who've had fun at this annual outdoor event.

Runners race for charity across Lamma
The day kicks off early for the 500+ runners in the Lamma8 and Lamma14 races, who will race along 8km and 14km trails through the hills, returning to Tai Wan To Beach in time for music and fun.

Music on two stages at Tai Wan To Beach
Live music starts at 12 noon on the Beach Stage, with classical-pop duo Sisters First. Next up are The Shortwaves, followed by festival rock and rollers Quasar, then a funk-infused set from High Hopes, before Red Star Rising bring their sizzling brand of rock blues to the beach. Late afternoon sees local favorites Midlife Crisis Cowboys on stage with "cod-Country" covers of 80s indie classics.

Around sunset The Side Burns take to the Beach Stage with an infectious brand of raucous rockabilly, followed by post-punk outfit The Sinister Left and indie-rockers Wanchai Warriors. Opium promise an intoxicating set with sultry trip-hop grooves/jazz and rock vibes.

After 9pm Lamma welcomes back the energetic psychedelic-synth of party rockers Shumking Mansion, followed by enthusiastic folk funk from Hedonia and DJ Jimbrowski with tunes from the jungle.

Over at the Road Stage music starts at 1pm, with the appropriately named Acoustic Noodles. Gifted solo singer-songwriters Jules O’Brien and Todd Warner Moore will also perform during the afternoon. Expect mantras and incantations from New Age ensemble One Love late afternoon, and after 6pm it's time for the DJs - Jimbrowski, Barnaby Bruce, Nosta and Dieter K Shafter.

FREE family-friendly fun
From 12 noon, Discovery College students will run beach games for kids, the Brazilian Football Academy is organizing soccer games for kids aged eight to 14 years from 2pm, and the beach volleyball tournament starts at 12 noon. There's also arts and crafts activities, face painting, and - not to be missed - magic and mirth with Robert Rogers' Family Fun, Fun Show at 2pm on the Road Stage.

Feasting and fundraising
Hot items at this year's charity live auction and silent auction include: luxury hotel stays, original artwork, restaurant vouchers, kids' activities, an eco-friendly stay at The Pavilions Himalayas in Nepal, and a tandem paragliding experience in Hong Kong.

"Everything you eat and drink at Lamma Fun Day also raises money for CWS HK and its life-changing work with children in Nepal," says event organizer Sonya Yeung of Bliss Creations. Fundraising stalls on Power Station Road include a licensed bar, food stalls serving dishes from around the world, amazing homemade cakes plus secondhand bargains at the bric-a-brac, clothes and book stalls.

Money raised at this year’s Lamma Fun Day will help fund CWS HK’s Child Friendly Schools initiative, which is transforming 48 schools in villages in western Nepal, over four years.

"Almost half of Nepal’s children drop out of school by the time they reach 15 years of age due to poorly trained teachers, a lack of resources and poor infrastructure. When a child drops out of school they become easy targets for human traffickers. The longer a child stays in school the less likely they are to be tricked and exploited," says Douglas Maclagan, founder CWS HK.

The Child Friendly School project makes school buildings and playgrounds safe, classrooms more appealing, provides extra teacher training and improves teaching resources. "We also reach out to communities to involve parents and promote education, which increases the chances of children attending and staying in schools in these poor and remote areas," says Jake McCauley, CEO, CWS HK.

Please help CWS HK transform lives through education in Nepal - join us at Lamma Fun Day, Saturday 4th November for Lamma Fun Day!
