"Dear Lamma-Gung,

Thank you for your wonderful support towards Lamma Fun Day 2014.

It really was a fabulous day! We were extremely lucky with the weather, the bands were amazing, the stalls were colourful, the auction items were great, the kids games were fun and the food and drinks were delicious. Thanks to the many amazing event sponsors we were able to put on one of the best outdoor music festivals and family fun days in Hong Kong.

Thank you for making it all possible! Please find attached a photo collage and some more photos of the great event here:
https://www.Facebook.com/LammaFunDay/photos_stream?tab=photos_albums.

Together with your support and that of the Lamma community, Lamma Fun Day raised just over HK$250,000 this year. This amount will go a very long way in Nepal and will go towards supporting our ‘children's receiving home’. Children who are rescued from corrupt orphanages are put in our care. We provide health care and counseling and then work hard to track down their families and begin the process of family reunification. Our aim is to track down the children's families and get them home - to get them out of a life of darkness and back into a life of love with their families!

Since March CWS has supported 63 children rescued from corrupt orphanages (54) and forced labour (9). These children were trafficked from their villages many years ago with promises of private education and first class opportunities when in fact they are mistreated, used as child labourers and often tools for "orphanages" to attract donations from well-meaning tourists.

To date 32 children (50%) have returned home and we are monitoring the process closely. With 18,000 children in 1,100 registered children homes across the country there is still a lot to be done. It is unknown how many homes are poorly run and CWS is hoping to begin a partnership with the Government to better monitor and control these homes. In the meantime, we will continue to support rescues and provide care to these children. Thank you for supporting us to continue our life changing work to reunite children who have been separated from their families.

Thank you for turning darkness into light for so many vulnerable children.

Wishing you all the very best,

Monica, Child Welfare Scheme"

Press release just received:

15th LAMMA FUN DAY: FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL FOR NEPAL
SATURDAY 7TH NOVEMBER 2015

(Hong Kong, 30th September 2015) The 15th Lamma Fun Day will take place on Saturday 7th November 2015, from 11am through to 10pm. The free outdoor music festival on Tai Wan To (Power Station Beach), near Yung Shue Wan, is a fantastic day out for music lovers and families, with food and market stalls, a licensed bar, arts and crafts plus kids’ activities.

Established in 2000, Lamma Fun Day is organized by volunteers, the Child Welfare Scheme Hong Kong (CWS HK) and Bliss Creations to raise funds for development projects in Nepal. “As a long standing resident of the island, we have been proud to lend our experience in event planning to support CWS”, says volunteer organizer Sonya Yeung of Bliss Creations.

The music kicks off just after noon with Tanquil Wednesday featuring Aileen Alonzo. Next up, Underground’s Chris B will be on stage with her thumping rock band Thinking Out Loud, followed by the politically satirical ska of Transnoodle. Then Hong Kong Battle of the Bands 2015 winners Les Gromechkos introduce their energetically distinctive blend of French folk rock.

After sunset the evening line-up starts with the SCMP cartoonist Harry Harrison’s eclectic TV cover band Cry Boys, followed by alt-folk funksters Hedonia and the highly talented Yamaha Asian Beat HK 2015 winners Stereo is the Answer. Expect psychedelic sounds from the enigmatic Shumking Mansion and the welcome return of The Sleeves with their infectious brand of rock and roll. Wrapping up the live music is the fast and furious punk outfit Defiant Scum. DJ Gramophone will be spinning 78s throughout the day while selected DJs will round up the after dark entertainment with an expert blend of party classics.

“We are the longest running outdoor music event in Hong Kong. We’ve seen some amazing musical performances on the beach on Lamma and this year will be better than ever,” says music coordinator Dave Wilkinson. “CWS has been working in Nepal for 18 years so supporting Lamma Fun Day is a good way to make sure money goes to where it’s most needed, especially after the devastating earthquakes earlier this year.”

Since the two earthquakes struck Nepal in late April and early May, CWS HK has been working with partner organizations to distribute emergency food and supplies, health care and counseling in remote areas. During the monsoon season, it also provided temporary homes and health camps as well as building materials and teaching supplies for temporary schools. Looking forward, for the next 12 to 18 months, in addition to existing programmes, CWS HK will work with villagers in one Village Development Committee area (nine villages) to enable people to rebuild their own homes and schools, and strengthen their communities.

Money raised at this year’s Lamma Fun Day will support CWS HK and its partners to support villagers in Nepal as they rebuild their lives. In particular, it will help expand anti-human trafficking work. “This is vital because human traffickers are targeting vulnerable children and young people, taking advantage of their desperation to find a way to survive,” says Zein Williams, director, CWS HK. “CWS is especially grateful to the Lamma community, the musicians and volunteers who give up their time and the many sponsors who together make it such a wonderful community event. Their continued support is extremely valuable, especially when the global community has moved its focus on other deserving causes that are also in great need of assistance.”

Bands and musicians all donate their time for free so more funds can be raised for Nepal. The majority of money raised on the day is through sales at the licensed bar, which offers reasonably priced draft beer, house wines and soft drinks; food stalls and a charity auction that runs throughout the afternoon.

Lamma Fun Day Sponsors, partners and supporters so far include Hong Kong Electric, San Miguel, Bliss Creations, Green Door Productions, Pyjama, Baggagexs, Links Moving, Oldham, Li & Nie Lawyers and gfmfm. There are many sponsors who are contributing to the auction; the sponsor list can be found here –

Child Welfare Scheme

Child Welfare Scheme (CWS) was founded in Nepal in 1997 and in Hong Kong (Charity
Registration Number 865654) in 2003 by Douglas Maclagan. CWS is a grassroots organization, working with children, communities and partners and focuses on giving children back their rights and changing lives in a sustainable way.

CWS post-earthquake rebuilding projects in nine Nepalese villages include:

. Training in earthquake resilient construction techniques

. Providing building packs for each home

. Enabling each village to set-up a small construction company, using new building techniques, with support from an on-the-ground skilled team.

. Provide access to a micro loan system

. Facilitate the villagers to access grants promised by the local Government authorities

. Support the total reconstruction of 10 Government schools and provide training to improve the learning environment for the children.

. Encourage strong social mobilisation support to keep these communities together and allow them to flourish with these new opportunities.

. Establish Child Clubs with the aim of preventing and protecting children from abuse, exploitation and neglect and reduce child labour and trafficking

. Run community awareness workshops on topics, trafficking, exploitation and gender-based violence

Music director Dave Wilkinson on RTHK Radio 3 just now, doing a fine job promoting the many bands at Lamma Fun Day.

The 36th HK Scout Troop will be helping out all day, they've even got their own Facebook event page to get well-organised, as usual.

Coming back from the Fun Day during day time and still have not had enough fun and excitement?

There's a children's event, mostly a magician who's usually working the children's birthday parties circuit, organised by the Govt.'s LCSD Dept, in the Football Pitch this Saturday afternoon...

Have a look, if you're passing by anyway, and then go back to the Fun Day!
That might be a lot more fun, especially as so many of your friends & acquaintances will be there, people you might not have seen in years (or decades)...

Thank-you letter to Lamma-zine from Children Welfare Society, Lamma Fun Day organiser:

Thank you for your wonderful support towards Lamma Fun Day.

Your support was extremely generous and enabled us to raise funds for the victims of devastating Earthquakes in Nepal.

Together with your support and that of the Lamma community, Lamma Fun Day raised just over HK$233,000 this year. This amount will go a very long way in Nepal and will be used to support Anti Trafficking programmes in communities that were devastated by the massive earthquakes of 25th April 2015 and 12th May 2015. These programmes are vital in a community that has been torn apart, where vulnerable groups tend to fall prey to human traffickers taking advantage of their desperation to leave their villages in search of means to survive. The programme covers 3 Districts and works in partnership with the community, the police and other local stakeholders to prevent human trafficking through awareness workshops, counseling, legal support, education and training.

Thank you for turning darkness into light for so many people in Nepal. We are extremely grateful for your support and we end the year celebrating the lives changed thanks to you.

Kindly find attached a photo collage, click to watch a video for this year and click to view the photos.

Have a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful 2016!

Kind regards,
Avishek Rai, Project Manager

City Hydroponics will be operating a charity stand at the upcoming Lamma Fun Day, hosting a children's work shop: upcycle a PET bottle into a hydroponic growing bottle, that never needs watering. In addition, it makes it very easy to follow the growth of not just the plant but also to watch the development of the roots inside. A great educational project.

We'll be providing all that's needed to start growing some herb or lettuce or other plant (including the nutrients, and of course all the material to decorate the bottle and make it pretty), except for the PET bottles (any bottle of 1.5-2.5 litres will do) which the participants have to bring themselves. The workshop is free of charge with voluntary donations - the full proceeds of the stand will go to the Lamma Fun Day charity.

For more questions, please contact me at the e-mail above or phone/WhatsApp 6053 6076 or http://www.cityhydroponics.hk

"Dear Lamma-Gung,

My name is Nicole Robinson and I am a Gr. 10 student at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS). This year all Gr. 10 CDNIS students must complete a personal project. The goal of my project is to raise HK$5000+ in donations for Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) - (http://hongkongdogrescue.com/) and Child Welfare Scheme (CWS, the organizer of Lamma Fun Day) - (http://www.cwshk.org/).

To achieve this, I will organize a dog talent show that will be part of Lamma Fun Day, where people will donate to enter their dogs in the show to compete in some fun competitions. I am writing to you in hopes that you would kindly help advertise for the dog show using the attached poster that I have created."

SCMP today:
Lamma Fun Day reaches 16th year as island’s ‘raw’ community spirit continues to flourish

It is kind of raw; Lamma has an organic community who really think they should go the extra mile to make it a better place,” says Zein Williams, chief executive of the Child Welfare Scheme and chief organiser of the island’s 16th annual fun day, organised in aid of schools in Nepal.

“The [islanders] are really laid back and the value of community is important to them,” she says.

Community spirit, not always considered prevalent in Hong Kong, has been hailed as the glue which holds together Lamma’s popular music festival.

More than 60 musicians, including several teenage bands, will perform at the event on Tai Wan To Beach and Power Station Road near Yung Shue Wan on November 12.

An auction where bidders can vie for a range of items including luxury hotel stays, restaurant vouchers and art work, usually proves a key fundraising element, racking up HK$80,000 alone last year, organisers say. They hope to top HK$300,000 this year. A total of HK$2.2 million has been raised for Child Welfare Scheme projects since the festival was launched in 2000.

Avi Rai, project coordinator for the Child Welfare Scheme, says Lamma is so well connected that residents feel more inclined to help those less fortunate than themselves.

“It is a strong community; they are a group of people who really want to do this,” he says. “The community is so secure that they want to give back.”

Jo Wilson, founder of ecological campaign group Living Lamma, which will organise an early morning beach clean-up the day after the festival, agrees that the island’s neighbourly spirit is infectious.

“To make it work, people not only have to have an idea but actually take the time to do it,” she says. “That’s not easy in Hong Kong, but I think on Lamma when people see others putting in the effort, they want to help. [This event] is for a great cause and it really reflects the wonderful community we have here.”

The festival’s music coordinator Dave Wilkinson says the set list alone is sure to create “an epic day out”.

“Our cracking line-up features some of the best music Hong Kong has to offer – from rockabilly to heavy metal and folk to electronica, with lashings of rock in between,” he says.

Scores of festival volunteers will also come together to offer arts, crafts, yoga workshops, beach volleyball, bric-a-brac stalls and food.

There will even be an 8km fun run from the event site to the wind turbine and over the hills to Sok Kwu Wan before looping back to Tai Wan To Beach, the organisers say.

Money raised from the event will go towards a four-year project focused on transforming 48 schools in villages near Pokhara in central Nepal, after former Lamma resident Andrew Doig visited the country and was impressed by Child Welfare Scheme work there. Parts of Nepal are still in significant need of rebuilding after an earthquake last year left almost 9,000 people dead and 22,000 injured. Unicef estimated about 24,000 classrooms were damaged or destroyed in the 7.8 magnitude quake, putting the education of one million children at risk.

Williams says the country’s schools are also severely underresourced and teaching quality needs to be improved.

“The government said they wanted everyone to go to school, but they did not think about how it would work,” she says.

“We reach out to communities to involve parents and promote education, which increases the chances of children attending and staying in schools. Education is also vital to support our anti-human-trafficking work and to make children aware of their rights.”
