From the Lamma Fun Day organisers:

"We are excited to announce the date for this year’s Lamma Fun Day. Drum role…….. Saturday 1st November 2014. Mark it in your diaries, the day after Halloween so be sure to come down, grab some refreshments, a swim in the ocean and chill on the beach while listening to the great bands we have this year. Bring your kids for the kids games and arts and crafts too!

Thank you to Harry Harrison for the awesome logo! The one we usually use is also designed by Harry – this year he has added a Halloween twist to it!

The event is from 11am to 10pm and is free to all. We will keep updating this Facebook page with the live bands schedule and information, market stalls, auction items, sponsors, kids games and more so keep coming back and please help us to spread the word!

Please contact monica@cwshk.org or zein@cwshk.org if you would like to volunteer, rent a stall, sponsor or simply to enquire."

Press release:

FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL ON THE BEACH

(Hong Kong, 19 September 2014) Halloween fun continues through the weekend at this year’s Lamma Fun Day where some of Hong Kong’s best bands and musicians will be playing live on Tai Wan To (Power Station Beach), Lamma Island on Saturday 1st November 2014.

Now in its 14th edition, Lamma Fun Day’s free outdoor music festival is the longest running music event in Hong Kong. It’s a fun day out for music lovers and families, with food and market stalls, a licenced bar, arts & crafts and kids’ activities, as well as live music on the beach from 12 noon through to 10pm.

Established to raise money for development projects in Nepal run by Child Welfare Scheme (CWS), this year’s Lamma Fun Day will support a new CWS project in Nepal that works with children and young people rescued from corrupt or fake orphanages. CWS provides protection, health care, education and much needed counseling to those rescued with the main emphasis on family reunification.

“Live music is at the heart of every Lamma Fun Day and this year’s line up is truly awesome with everything from electronica and heavy metal to country music and indie rock, performed by a multinational cast,” says music coordinator Dave Wilkinson. “The event is growing from strength to strength every year thanks to the great support we get from local musicians and live music venues in Hong Kong. And what could be better than drinking a cold beer for charity on the beach listening to some of the very best bands in Hong Kong in the autumn sunshine.”

The evening line-up features metal heads DP, the return of show stoppers Shotgun Politics, indie mavericks New Tonic Press, the melodic voices of Dark Himaya and country outfit The Curs. On stage in the afternoon is the irrepressible Dr Eggs, acoustic guitar impresario Todd Warner Moore, soulful electronica hip hop trio The Anello, kids’ favourites The Hairy Family Jam Band, Pink Floyd cover band Brain Damage and kicking off the day the fascinating soundscapes of Mogulogeek. Add to this a couple of sets from sensational drumming troop Salvaje. DJ Gramophone will be spinning 78s throughout the day while DJ Barnaby Bruce rounds up the entertainment programme after dark.

Bands and musicians all donate their time for free, so the majority of money raised on the day is through sales at the licenced bar, which offers reasonably priced draft beer, house wines and soft drinks, food stalls, donations and a charity auction that runs through the afternoon. “Come along, have fun and enjoy a great day out for charity!” says event organizer Sonya Yeung. “Our sponsors and supporters are very generous so there are always some great items to bid on in the live charity auction on the day, from original artworks and spa sessions to hotel nights and specialty wines.”

Supported by a large team of volunteers from Lamma Island and all over Hong Kong, Lamma Fun Day is organized by CWS Hong Kong. Lamma Fun Day 2014 sponsors, partners and supporters include Hong Kong Electric, San Miguel, Bliss Creations, Toi Toi, Living Lamma Baggage Excess, Jing Jing Restaurant & Bar, Sea Lagoon, Green Door Productions, Escapade Sports, Dadi Precious, Lamma.com.hk and gfmfm.

Child Welfare Scheme

Child Welfare Scheme (CWS) was founded in Nepal in 1997 and in HK (Charity Registration Number 865654) in 2003 by Douglas Maclagan. CWS is a grassroots organization, working with children, communities and partners and focuses on giving children back their rights and changing lives in a sustainable way. This year proceeds from Lamma Fun Day will help fund a new CWS project in Nepal that is working with children and young people rescued from corrupt or fake orphanages in Nepal. This pilot project is helping reunite families and removes children from abusive situations and the risk of trafficking.

"Dear all,

I am still in awe as to how amazing everyone was once again this year – the event went really smooth and everyone had a great time! And of course what’s a Lamma Fun Day without a bit of police, ambulance and fire service drama!

OK, so here is the tentative breakdown – gross income figures because we are still waiting to hear back from all re expenses.

· HK Electric sponsorship – HK$25,000
· Live Auction –HK$94,650
· Silent Auction – HK$3,800
· Food – HK$21,000 (minus $1,500 float) = HK$19,500
· Tai Peng Spices – HK$4,040 (including $240 from plant sale)
· Bar – 61,400 (minus $1,400 float) = $60,000
· Kids games – HK$7,211 (minus $1,000 float) = HK$6,211
· Blessing tree game – HK$233
· Tshirt sales donation box – HK$460
· Stalls – HK$9,300
· Stall holder donation – HK$240
· Baked cakes – HK$7,199
· Bric-a-Brac – HK$8,629 (minus $1,500 float) = HK$7,129
· CWS stall and magician donation box – HK$1,649
· Bar, stage and crowd donation boxes – HK$3,081
· Spider and snack stall – HK$1,660.10
· Acoustic stage donation box – HK$958
· Children’s games donation box – HK$100
· Auction donation box – HK$20
· Face Painting – HK$1,150
· Nick Forsey stall – HK$4,000

Total = HK$250,380.10

That is amazing!!! We do have quite a bit of expenses (food & bar especially) so will not know net figure just yet. But this is overwhelming.

Something that is not quantifiable is how much fun everyone had – the crowd loved it, kids and adults alike.

Not listed above is the stage bit cause it’s free but without it we wouldn’t be able to raise the rest so thanks Dave, Gareth and Mikkel. Also a big thank you must also go to Ewa too who was walking around all day filming the event. Thank you! Can’t wait to see the footage.

Thank you, hugely, to each and every one of you who make Lamma Fun Day possible and fun and who enable CWS to do the important work we do in Nepal.

I’ve just arrived in Nepal and will be seeing a very happy and grateful Douglas – and a very jealous one too, having missed what was truly the best Lamma Fun Day I have seen!

Thanks a million!
Zein"

"An odd thing happened at Lamma Fun Day. My little boy spotted a cobra swimming in the sea.

By the time I got over it there swum ashore and a crowd had gathered. I did a shoddy job of wrapping it up in a towel and trying to put it into my bag so I could get it off the beach when two awesome people came up, pinched its mouth shut with their fingers, picked the snake up with their hands and put it in the bushes. Much admiration."

Lamma Fun Day 1/11/2014

by Nick the Bookman, Nov 10

I'm a bit late, but I've finally got to Lamma Fun Day 2014 on Power Station Beach. It's been a long morning - recovering from last night's excellent Halloween Gig at the Lamma Grill. Again, thanks to everyone who came along and supported/enjoyed/freaked out at our twisted tunesmithery. Couldn't have done it as well without your grinning ghastly-ghostly fiendly-friendly smiling/leering faces. Special horror howls of applause to Jim, for providing all the techy stuff, and our genial hosts, Caroline, Jim and Raj. Anyway, had a brief demon free dreamy night and had to get an early ferry to town to sort out Lena's medical supplies. Also had the dubious pleasure of being accosted - mid late breakfast - by two Chinese workers in Cafe de Coral who tugged my beard to see if it was real and then took a selfie with me. It's times like these you sorta gotta goa witha da flowa. Hope it's not a portent of pix to come at the Fun Day.

It's bonkers coming back off the ferry. The usual stream of off-islanders and mainlanders who wander up and down the Main Street, taking photos of everything that moves. Or doesn't. While leaving very little money in the Lamma economy. Maybe that will change today and they're on their way to PSB for the music, magic and the exceedingly cheap shopping and swapping opportunities. Or maybe, they'll all queue up at the Tofu Shop and not go anywhere near the beach. That is basically what happens. So in effect, there are two distinct parties going on. Ravers and revellers on the beach. Gawking tourists almost everywhere else.

I've arrived on the be and the set up is fantastic. Well, the same as all previous Fun Days. Shops up and down the road. Food and drink tents nearer the Power Station along with the portable toilets. An acoustic stage for the buskers. The big stage for the bands is set up on the grass near the canoes and other boats. Chunny, The Gramophone Man, is adjacent. On stage are Jim, Les and Simon who are conducting the auction. They are worthy wheedlemasters. All conquering coaxsmen collecting for charity. Separating the spectators from their spondulicks. Prising the pennies from the punters. All proceeds going to the Child Welfare Scheme.

I'm on the road, nattering with tonight's headliners DP, ie Dave and Paul. Dave's lovely wife Clare is down on the beach somewhere with their two kids. Don from Pak Kok (who's recorded with Paul) snaps a photo of us. All of us bearded and of increasing length as you look left to right. Don jokes that he's going to photoshop all the beards around. Put me down for a tryptich if it happens Don! Meanwhile, Timmy from Shotgun Politics and Jules, aka Dr. Eggs, are getting ready to strum and strut their stuff on stage. I've seen Dr. Eggs a couple of times before. The man is a non stop ball of expostulatary energy, Here, there and everywhere. A perfect front man. The first time I saw them a few years ago, Paul was their drummer. They had a few problems with some of the trickier electronic sections of their set, but it was a stunning show. Then I caught them at the Big Gig near the Hong Kong side of the Star Ferry during this year's Rugby Sevens Week. The lovely lasses who were playing guitar and bass in that incarnation of the band are now no more. Not deceased/demised. Merely departed from the band. True love doesn't always run so smooth.

Anyway today's line up is Jules on acrobatic vocals. Timmy is guest guitarist. Gavin (not Sheila's husband) and Joe are the solid bass drums backbone. While, Jules is the main eye attraction, I'm also watching Timmy. For a big man, he moves with fluid grace. Almost seems to flow. Reminds me of early Hollywood star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle who was light on his feet and moved like a comedic ballet dancer. He was tried three times for a fatal rape of a Hollywood starlet in the 1930's. Dirty politics was behind the trial. Eventually he was acquitted. His career never recovered. He later got some directing work through Mack Reynolds of Keystone Kops fame. Had to use the alias Will B. Good. Anyway, Dr. Eggs turned in a fast paced frenetic and exhilirating show. A good augury for later.

Which is now thanks to the miracle of time-blip reconstruction. The Curs are on stage. Well the Bearded Ukeladies are at least. That's Leigh and Harry who kick off their set with "King of the Swing" from "The Jungle Book". Plus, an interesting reconstruction of Tom Jones' delightful ditty "It's Not Unusual". The only unusual thing is that it's not accompanied by a shower of sweaty and sexy ladies lingerie. Maybe that's just an exclusive reaction to Tom in concert in Las Vegas. Or maybe no one thought of it. Eventually, the full line up of The Curs is on stage. Magnus on drums, Jacob on ukelele and Gavin on bass. John Hutton could have been here today, but according to Harry, he's "apparently in prison. What are you gonna do?" (I think that's a joke, but with John, well...) So what the band do is bring Dan The Bastard up on stage for a splendidly raucous rocking run through "Sympathy For The Devil". It's vastly well received and Dan finishes by appealing for "a wheelchair ramp for easier access" at future Lamma Fun Days.

Chunny has been having a wonderful time with his Olde-Tyme Gramophone set up. At one point he plays "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus. A song I inflicted on my doting audience last night. Which Chunny was kind enough to download for me back in 2002. Along with a large and odd assortment of Xmas and Halloween tunes courtesy of Dr. Demento. He's an outre musical shock jock. Specialises in some of the world's worst records and other audio curiosities and is a must hear disc jockey. He (that's Chunny) fills in the time nicely as Dark Himaya get set up.

Dark Himaya are Ivy, on guitar and vox. Aileen on keyboards and vox. Alejandro on bass and Keith on drums. They released their debut LP "breaking the spell" last year and it's a wonderful album of haunting gothic beauty and deep folk. Slows the pace down a bit, but this ain't a speed sprint to the finish and their languid yet passionate performance sucks the audience in. I think there was a collective deep breath when their set finished as people were were so entranced they kinda forgot how to breathe. Unfortunately, I only caught party of the set as my good drinking buddy Ron Rico (he's a Caribbean mon!) was becoming a bit disruptive and I had to walk him around a bit and share his undeniable charms with other people in the crowd. But Dark Himaya are always a pleasure and it's about time they made a second album. Pretty please with a sugerlump on top.

Next band up that I caught was my Performance Of The Day. It's New Tonic Press. A trio featuring Sue on guitar and vox. Malte on drums and Koya on bass. Koya is an institution in HK. He's been in about 16 bands or so and recorded, ooh, possibly scores of others. Including NTP's debut CD entitled "Sunny does it for the money". Kevin Voight, who' now left Lamma with his family, was the bassist on that release. I think I wrote in an earlier Lamma Fun Day story that Sue was possibly our best kept musical secret. She used to do folk music mainly, but NTP is a chance for her to strut and spread her wings. I know I saw her play and sing back up with Reign Lee in The Wanch a few years ago which was a great gig, New Tonic Press has been gigging for about three years now and they are proudly punky with a spacy psychedelic undertow at times. Case in point is the song they played about midway through their set. It's called "Feel Real".

I'm lying on the grass, front and left of the stage. I'm also having a very psychedelic flashback moment when the stage has blurred to invisibility and the light show/coloured spot dots and beams are hovering on the edge of The Great Emptiness that is our interstellar cosmic void. Vision is contracted to just the stage and the swirly whirl vortex. Sue has turned to face her bandmates. She's playing a riff that's not a million light years removed from The Ruts "Babylon's Burning". Sort of dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk etc. Quite trippy fast. Malte has just suddenly got creative on the drums. Bit Jaki Liebowitz from German band Can. Koya does something and the drums bass are suddenly just impressive. It's like they've moved up several gears, but are also telling Sue don't worry. We're your safety net. You can cut loose and fly. We've got your back. As I'm thinking this, Sue unleashes the most exquisite guitar solo. Straight from Planet God or something, It's an absolute 24-carat gold plated jaw dropping moment. The best analogy I can think of is like hearing The Knack play "My Sharona". Then the guitar solo is unleashed. Like from another song entirely. Beamed in from The Twilight Zone. I told this to Sue afterwards and she didn't seem displeased. For me, that was the Game Over moment. Might as well go home now. There won't be anything better.* And for me, there wasn't. Sue apologises for not being able to play an encore because "there's still two more bands to come". Actually, that's unfair.* The next two bands were different in their own special way. There weren't any bad performances today. But New Tonic Press were off the planet in the best sense of it all.

Shotgun Politics have the unenviable task of following NTP. And they do a cracking good job. They deliver a masterclass in melodic power pop. Full marks to Timmy on guitar and vox. Freddy on drums. Niall and Jimmy on guitar and bass. They've got it all. Call and response with a suitably happy, nay delirious audience which is crammed front and centre stage. Kicking Out The Jams in fulsome appreciation. The band say they're not political but praise Occupy Central and do a song that they hope Occupy Central might hear. Unlikely, but there's a pretty good chance that Cheung Chau would have heard the song. Only three miles away across open water. The band are delighted to have been invited back to play Lamma Funday after a year off. They didn't disappoint and here's hoping you'll visit again.

The auction has raised about $94,000. Total raised over the day is nudging a quarter of a million. Good work fellas. Now shift over and let me get to DP who are chomping at the bit. The dynamic duo are Dave on bass (with extra FX pedals) and vocals. Paul on some splendidly thrashed drums. Powerful stuff. He leaves no cymbal uncrashed. He is certainly among the top one drummers in Hong Kong. The set draws heavily on their DP debut release with possibly a new song called "Struck by Lightning". The kicker is when he sings the last lines "...struck by lightning 66 times. And I'm starting to like it". The only slight flaw with DP's performance is that there's only so much melody one can wring out of a drums bass line up. Not to say they're bad. They're not, but a little goes a long way and it's probably good that they have to curtail their set in order to get the last ferry home. They do play an encore to welcome applause.

Basically, it was another hell of a fine Lamma Fun Day. Sorry to the bands and singers I missed. Still working on my cloning mission to enable me to see lots more of Clockenflap. But that's unlikely to occur this year. Great to chat with Christian and Joyce from The Bollands. Sorry I missed The Hairy Family Jam Band. Everyone say's they're the best kiddy entertainment band since Justin and Britney left the Mouseketeers. Or since the Jackson Five days before the late Michael went from being a black boy to a white Diana Ross lookalike. Also great to chat with Keith from The Sleeves whose powerhouse band will be playing at the Island Bar sometime mid November. Don't miss them! Thanks to Dick" stock" Jones for all the great 60's CDs. Thanks to all the people who followed me around taking photos. Kim, I hope your shot of me framed under Chunny's gramophone horn came out. Polish Eva. You looked super-professional filming everything. Hope you got a great music documentary. Finally, hanks to Ron Rico for the libationary largesse... ah fuck it. This Is The End (my wayward friends). ntb
