Submitted by the Brand on the Beach cleanup organisers:

Hi all,

Having begun a monthly beach clean at Pak Kok in December last year, we are creating a wave of interest from the public and the Govt who are now organizing their own SHORELINES CLEAN UP for HK!!! A huge thanks to you all for helping thus far! We would love you to continue if you can or join us if you have not done so already.

Details are below and do please share with friends. Bring lots of water to drink in a THERMOS or reusable container and snacks, food sunscreen, hats. We will have gloves and bags.

Get there on the 9.15 Pak Kok ferry from YSW and we will walk over to the beach together or call me for more directions.

This is a great family activity and feels good to do!

Details below are for your info and for forwarding to colleagues and friends.

Many Thanks,
Roz Keep - Vice Chair, Living Lamma - 9348 8726<HR>
Beach Clean Sunday at Pebbles Beach, Pak Kok .
9-12 all welcome.

Brand On The Beach, and many other campaigns have spurred the Govt to create their own clean up HK Shorelines event. From now until end of this year create a group, choose a beach and let them and us know.
Already many groups will take part, including our wonderful Lamma Paddlers on Saturday, Living Lamma, Canadian International School students, Lantau and Cheung Chau, Sheko groups etc.

Very Dear volunteers of BRAND ON THE BEACH campaign, Pak Kok, Lamma,

Next Sunday is the last in our ONE YEAR beach Clean campaign, Brand On The Beach.
It is amazing to think a whole year has gone by since first cleaning this desperate beach, which Jo Wilson and volunteers have done each month to record what and how much rubbish is caught by this baseball glove shaped cove opposite Aberdeen harbour. A lot of the rubbish we find comes from there and a lot if not most of it is styrofoam and plastic bottles.

YOU ARE INVITED to the last in this series of clean ups next Sunday 15th Dec. There may be reindeer; there may be carols (just not on this beach).
Volunteer one more time! We have invited Govt departments FEHD and EPD to take part too.
The winning brand will be announced and our next project will be discussed.

A HUGE THANK YOU for participating this year! We couldn't have done it without you.
We look forward to seeing you, your friends and family next Sunday morning;

Stay tuned to the Living Lamma News Letters also for news of projects next year.

Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to you all!
Love and peace,
Roz Keep

TVB Pearl Report tonight at 8pm about plastic pollution, featuring The Lady in the Pink Hat (and Pink Plastic Gloves) and Living Lamma being interviewed on Pebbles Beach in Pak Kok recently. Preview video:

Plastic Plague (Preview)

"Plastic products proliferate in fast-paced Hong Kong where convenience is paramount. But they can wreak havoc on the environment. The sorry sight of plastic-plagued beaches has prompted concerned citizens to take matters into their own hands.

Reporter: Yvonne Lou"

It'll be available to view online afterwards on the TVB website:

Email newsletter from Living Lamma:

Brand on the Beach thanks you!

Thank you Vita, thank you EPD, thank you FEHD, thank you District Office, thank you kids, thank you parents, thank you everyone!!

Last Sunday 2nd March was an historical moment for Brand on the Beach. Our leading brand (by number of plastic bottles we picked up from the beach last year) Vita sent 3 representatives to help with the clean up, one of whom got off a plane from Malaysia that morning to be with us, thus winning the prize for dedication in travelling the furthest distance to participate in a clean up.

We were also joined by staff of the fabulous Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. If you haven't noticed these are the people who work relentlessly to try to keep our environment clean (say hello and thank them next time you see them - they do such a good job in often difficult circumstances). Supervisors Terrific Terrance, Handsome Anson and the wonderful Mr. Wong brought along 3 staff. Amy from EPD gave up her Sunday morning for a second time to come and help and we were very happy to see Joe from District Office. We so appreciate you all coming!

Special mention should also be made to Layla, a year 5 student at Bradbury, who designed a poster for her school's newsletter to advertise the clean up. But thanks to all the kids, their parents and other residents that came along.

We hope that all participants will take the experience back into their workplaces and schools and share it with their friends and colleagues, encourage others to come along next time and think about creative ways that we can all work together to stem the flow of trash that is ending up on our beach. The amount of plastic is particularly alarming.

No-one can change this, but everybody can. We hope that this year's Brand on the Beach will inspire efforts with government, business and community working together to change habits that will last for lifetimes.

Some Useful Links:

Sit back and watch, then like and share…..

And read Beach Party, the story of Brand on the Beach which won the prize for most creative entry in the SCMP/RTHK short story competition 2013. The account of what was found at the beach during the year is entirely true, but has to be seen to be believed!

Hi Guys

Did somebody think before about doing the beach cleanup but from under the water? I just did a short snorkel yesterday on the small beach behind the pavilion (behind the library) and I was shocked with the amount of rubbish there. I have attached some picture with what I managed to find within 30min. Still a lot left behind.

As I am a diver, I was thinking of making few dives around key Lamma beaches and clean the bottoms. Anybody care to join?

I have 2 complete sets of diving gear, what we need is to arrange tanks (most likely from Sai Kung).

Let me know if you are interested,

Chris

From Living Lamma:

"Featuring our very own Stanley Chan and South Lamma.

Could Lamma be the first polystyrene free community? Could we go plastic bottle free? What better demonstration to show people how they need to change their habits when a polystyrene/plastic bottle free community is trashed in this way? Perhaps then the relevant authorities will get together and take action? And Lamma will show by its own example just what needs to be done."

Have the YSW Harbour Beach Cleanup and Bear Camp joined forced? See Doctor URSO the Bear, recent Lammaite of the Day, join in the fun on the beach yesterday below.

Should we call it the Bear Camp Beach Cleanup? After "Brand on the Beach" and "Beauty on the Beach", maybe they should call it "Brawn on the Beach"?

Quoting from the Living Lamma Facebook group

"DAY 5 of the YSW clean up marathon - oh happy day. It was like a fairy tale (Beauty and the Beach?) Big man, big muscles, large spade and particularly nasty spiky metal thing removed. LIKE!!!!"

"Here it is, the horrid metal spikey thing, being pulled, then dug, then pulled, then dug again and pulled... And out it came!! Well done Justin. We'll be down again!"

Join in, just show up at YSW Harbour beach at low tide in the morning or afternoon, help out and get brawny like Doctor URSO!
