Lamma islanders warned over pile of waste they cleared from beach

"Far from the heart of Occupy Central, one woman is battling the government bureaucracy over accusations of a different kind of illegal occupation. Long-time Lamma Island resident Jo Wilson, 45, has drawn the battle lines over the Yung Shue Wan waterfront rather than roads and government buildings.

Fed up with seeing piles of litter strewn along the coastline, the mother of two started a 42-day clean-up project, picking up all manner of rubbish that had washed on to the shore, with the help of dozens of volunteers. Every morning since September 21, Wilson has gone to the beach, laboriously sieving sand to separate bits of glass, plastic and polystyrene as well as collecting construction waste. Yesterday was the 42nd and final day - the figure is a nod to the number of kilometres that marathon runners cover during a race.

But little did she suspect that her sustained efforts - along with those of parents and children who have given up their time - would be rewarded with a warning from the Lands Department. Two weeks ago, she was startled to find a letter from the department on top of a large pile of rubbish that volunteers had collected and placed in a corner. The letter stated that the debris had to be moved as it was an "illegal occupation" of the land..."

Of course, we know who made the complaint and why.
Yu Lai Fan really doesn't want a clean beach in YSW. She wants it to look like shit so she can say there is no loss by concreting the bay over for her beloved reclamation.

Living Lamma is on her enemies list. She will obstruct anything they do or advocate in retaliation for opposing her pet projects, even though she nearly always gets her way in the end after the government departments involved go through a charade consultation.
She blocked the use of the area next the public toilets for glass collection a year ago, for instance.

Usually, when we clean up here, it is to count the amount of trash by brand that washes up here. But having done the counting so many times - we know that we will find between 500-900 plastic bottles, 250 straws, 100+ lighters, 50+ tetra packs, etc - we really don't need to keep counting it. Suffice to say, anyone with a half decent set of eyes and a brain will see that the amount of trash in our oceans has reached alarming proportions. The question is now, what do we do about it?

Liina has a wonderful approach to education, which helps people connect with the trash in a way that is thought provoking and fun. Today the kids were divided into teams and instructed to collect only trash that belonged to the colour that was given to their team. This was then arranged into a beautiful (yet terrifying - this stuff should not be in the sea) piece of art. The kids also cleaned the beach and were asked to think over lunch about the trash we produce on a daily basis, even when we do such simple things as eating or drinking. Is it possible to carry out our activities without producing waste?

Here are some of the photos - please share."

From Living Lamma:

"Dear Friends,

Just to share with you a copy of the certificate that we picked up last night at the Hong Kong Clean Up awards.

This is a shared award - the success of the venture was not down to any one person or organisation. It was a true community effort - not only from the point of view of those who actively took part in the clean up, but also from the many smiling faces and thumbs up we received, the conversations that were generated, and even from some of the more surprising reactions, which nonetheless provided insight into the problem and perhaps will give clues about how to proceed in future.

On the way into town yesterday, I was distressed to see so much trash on the beach again. Imagine the excitement at returning home to see that someone had cleaned it up - a Facebook friend reported seeing a Chinese family cleaning up yesterday afternoon. Also on the way home I was hugged by a Western dad who told me that he started picking up trash for the first time on the beach the other day. He thinks its “brilliant” what we’re doing - particularly for his kids who have responded so well to seeing their dad care for the world they live in and for the dad who now feels he is showing his kids, by good example, how to care for the world.

I am sure that beautiful clean up stations, with friendly messages encouraging people to clean up would really have a positive impact. This is, of course, something that we could organise ourselves, but if we are to succeed in the battle against trash in our oceans, it is so important that people see those charged with environmental protection taking the lead, with community from all walks of life supporting them. We have to step beyond societal divisions and make it the norm for everyone to be on the same side when it comes to cleaning up.

Please share the award with your friends and colleagues - perhaps next year other communities could set their own challenges, though I was told last night that in other areas community and government are not coming together as they are on Lamma. Hopefully by showing a good example, infecting people with inspiration and positivity, we can make the Yung Shue Wan experience the standard for Hong Kong.

Best wishes and thanks for helping,
Jo"

LIVING LAMMA AGM

"The Annual General Meeting for Living Lamma will be held at 10 am on Saturday January 10th on the beach next to the Sampan at Yung Shue Wan. The business of the meeting:

1. Election of Committee for 2015
2. Adoption of Financial Report

After that there will be a general chat so that people can find out more and let us know if they would like to get more involved (you don't need to be on the committee - volunteers are always welcome and we can help with our extensive experience of engaging with government and carrying out clean up and recycling initiatives over the last 6 years)

We will also be trying our new clean up station, so that anyone, anytime can jump down onto the beach and clean up (including those people from the bike park - ha! ha!)

We have had 5 nominations for the committee thus far: Roz Keep, Sheli Bowman, Charlotte Varley, Barbara Tavernard, and me, Jo Wilson. If you would like to put yourself forward for the committee, please send me a message with a few lines about who you are, what your skills are, and what you would like to contribute. We can have up to 10 members on the committee and we need people with time, particularly in the day, who can actively carry out ideas (particularly for fund raising, running events, etc.) If we get more than 10 nominations, there will be a vote on 10th January. Deadline for nominations: January 3rd 2015.

Anyone is welcome to come to the AGM. Membership of Living Lamma is currently free. Our motto: "If you clean, you're in!" But please RSVP if you would like to come to the AGM, so that we can make adequate preparations.

Photos: A clean up station in the making: One crate, rescued from landfill. Plastic from the beach for decoration, now sorted in jars, ready for some creativity."

The beach cleaning of Power Station Beach has been moved from today 8am to 2pm, if the rains will stop:

Living Lamma writes today, Sat, May 16:

"Rain, rain, go away, come again another day

OK everyone sing along and we'll be fine for this afternoon. 2pm Tai Wan To (Power Station) beach. If it is tipping it down or there is any lightning, we will not go, but as the I was brought up in Yorkshire a little light rain (Yorkshire mist we call it) won't put me off.

OK, so now it is really pouring, just when I need to leave the house with a trolley load of equipment for the kindergarten family day and the beach clean up. My mum always used to say that I wasn't made of sugar and I won't melt if I go out in the rain, but I am not so sure. I melting just looking at it at the moment! It is officially pouring."
