Brand on the Beach thanks you!

Thank you Vita, thank you EPD, thank you FEHD, thank you District Office, thank you kids, thank you parents, thank you everyone!!

Last Sunday 2nd March was an historical moment for Brand on the Beach. Our leading brand (by number of plastic bottles we picked up from the beach last year) Vita sent 3 representatives to help with the clean up, one of whom got off a plane from Malaysia that morning to be with us, thus winning the prize for dedication in travelling the furthest distance to participate in a clean up.

We were also joined by staff of the fabulous Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. If you haven't noticed these are the people who work relentlessly to try to keep our environment clean (say hello and thank them next time you see them - they do such a good job in often difficult circumstances). Supervisors Terrific Terrance, Handsome Anson and the wonderful Mr. Wong brought along 3 staff. Amy from EPD gave up her Sunday morning for a second time to come and help and we were very happy to see Joe from District Office. We so appreciate you all coming!

Special mention should also be made to Layla, a year 5 student at Bradbury, who designed a poster for her school's newsletter to advertise the clean up. But thanks to all the kids, their parents and other residents that came along.

We hope that all participants will take the experience back into their workplaces and schools and share it with their friends and colleagues, encourage others to come along next time and think about creative ways that we can all work together to stem the flow of trash that is ending up on our beach. The amount of plastic is particularly alarming.

No-one can change this, but everybody can. We hope that this year's Brand on the Beach will inspire efforts with government, business and community working together to change habits that will last for lifetimes.

Hi Guys

Did somebody think before about doing the beach cleanup but from under the water? I just did a short snorkel yesterday on the small beach behind the pavilion (behind the library) and I was shocked with the amount of rubbish there. I have attached some picture with what I managed to find within 30min. Still a lot left behind.

As I am a diver, I was thinking of making few dives around key Lamma beaches and clean the bottoms. Anybody care to join?

I have 2 complete sets of diving gear, what we need is to arrange tanks (most likely from Sai Kung).

Have the YSW Harbour Beach Cleanup and Bear Camp joined forced? See Doctor URSO the Bear, recent Lammaite of the Day, join in the fun on the beach yesterday below.

Should we call it the Bear Camp Beach Cleanup? After "Brand on the Beach" and "Beauty on the Beach", maybe they should call it "Brawn on the Beach"?

Of course, we know who made the complaint and why.
Yu Lai Fan really doesn't want a clean beach in YSW. She wants it to look like shit so she can say there is no loss by concreting the bay over for her beloved reclamation.

Living Lamma is on her enemies list. She will obstruct anything they do or advocate in retaliation for opposing her pet projects, even though she nearly always gets her way in the end after the government departments involved go through a charade consultation.
She blocked the use of the area next the public toilets for glass collection a year ago, for instance.

"Dear Friends,

Just to share with you a copy of the certificate that we picked up last night at the Hong Kong Clean Up awards.

This is a shared award - the success of the venture was not down to any one person or organisation. It was a true community effort - not only from the point of view of those who actively took part in the clean up, but also from the many smiling faces and thumbs up we received, the conversations that were generated, and even from some of the more surprising reactions, which nonetheless provided insight into the problem and perhaps will give clues about how to proceed in future.

On the way into town yesterday, I was distressed to see so much trash on the beach again. Imagine the excitement at returning home to see that someone had cleaned it up - a Facebook friend reported seeing a Chinese family cleaning up yesterday afternoon. Also on the way home I was hugged by a Western dad who told me that he started picking up trash for the first time on the beach the other day. He thinks its “brilliant” what we’re doing - particularly for his kids who have responded so well to seeing their dad care for the world they live in and for the dad who now feels he is showing his kids, by good example, how to care for the world.

I am sure that beautiful clean up stations, with friendly messages encouraging people to clean up would really have a positive impact. This is, of course, something that we could organise ourselves, but if we are to succeed in the battle against trash in our oceans, it is so important that people see those charged with environmental protection taking the lead, with community from all walks of life supporting them. We have to step beyond societal divisions and make it the norm for everyone to be on the same side when it comes to cleaning up.

Please share the award with your friends and colleagues - perhaps next year other communities could set their own challenges, though I was told last night that in other areas community and government are not coming together as they are on Lamma. Hopefully by showing a good example, infecting people with inspiration and positivity, we can make the Yung Shue Wan experience the standard for Hong Kong.

"Rain, rain, go away, come again another day

OK everyone sing along and we'll be fine for this afternoon. 2pm Tai Wan To (Power Station) beach. If it is tipping it down or there is any lightning, we will not go, but as the I was brought up in Yorkshire a little light rain (Yorkshire mist we call it) won't put me off.

OK, so now it is really pouring, just when I need to leave the house with a trolley load of equipment for the kindergarten family day and the beach clean up. My mum always used to say that I wasn't made of sugar and I won't melt if I go out in the rain, but I am not so sure. I melting just looking at it at the moment! It is officially pouring."
