Using Hutchison 3 mobile connection (run by a USB stick) on my PC at Hung Shing Yeh. At $200 per month, poor thing.

Still happy with my basic Netvigator subscription at $162/month.
I should also try this via Wifi from my rooftop...

The netvigator 3MB line has become a joke - consistently slow in the evenings.

{L_IMAGE}

I have had the "technician" out to check and apparently this is as good as it gets. At weekends on non-peak times I get near to the 3MB, but weekday evenings I'm struggling to get 1MB.

Sha Po Old Village on a Wednesday, 11am. PCCW's speed's seems still OK.

But yes, in the evenings, everything slows down quite dramatically.
Maybe all this NOW TV subscribers clogging up our puny microwave link to HK Island?

Terrible result that I got tonight at 1:30AM in Sha Po Old Village. I have an Android phone (Nexus One) with CSL 1010 on tethering.

It's been consistently bad in the evening when, I assume, a lot of people are using the network. It is in fact so bad that I am having trouble interacting with just a text terminal. Since I have no trouble streaming music at 128K (from overseas), I wonder if there's something else that affects using terminals (also having problems with normal webpages).

That said, I was with Smartone before, and it seemed to be have similar issues I described here above.

Btw, anyone knows about whether LTE will be or is available on Lamma?

Hi folks,

Speedtest.net has a new "WAVE" feature to group different users' results. I started a WAVE for Lamma:
http://www.speedtest.net/wave/82153f2f6dc0c398

Suggest we keep tests within the WAVE going forward to aid ISP comparison. Please select the Los Angeles DreamHost server for consistency.

Note: If your browser supports the Location API you can go to the settings page before your test to "Refine Location" so your results show a Lamma village name rather than the address of your ISP's office building.

Yung Shue Wan, behind the clinic.

CSL (one2free) Lifestyle Home Broadband been feeling terribly slow in the evenings for the past month or so:
{L_IMAGE}
Cell ID 23173, LAC 11032, RSSI -72 dBm

Sometimes it gets so bad I have to switch to a hotspot on my Smartone mobile to complete a task and it's a significant improvement each time.

The Broadband speeds have been fluctuating like crazy recently, becoming slower and slower overall, down to .03Mbps for some users, unusable, especially for home office workers, like myself.

There's a FASTER BROADBAND FOR LAMMA facebook group (run by Lamma Dragon's Oliver) with already 55 members, trying to figure out how to get faster Broadband by lobbying and other means. Check out the group and post your experiences:

Holiday morning, 8:30am, still OK, But as soon as more people wake up, check their Facebook pages and watch NOW TV, then it'll probably go down to below 1Mb/s again.

BTW, I've put a little promotion for the Faster Broadband for Lamma FB group into the Lamma-zine.

"Slower than 94% of Hong Kong". Great.
Still pay the same, or more, than they do.

I'm not sure if I'm just lucky, but the last few nights my PCCW 3MB has been on fire.

I've been getting record highs, just a little above my previous bests (over 400kb/s), but generally and consistently in the high 300's (the result below is using the suggested standardised LA server - my real speeds are a bit higher).

A big improvement on what I've been seeing every night since my last post 2 years ago.

I think PCCW might have upped their game. In anticipation of the HGC fibre option?

CAN WE HOPE???

No improvement at all for me, I still get between 1-1.5 M, despite paying for 3M.

{L_IMAGE}

Pacific is giving up the home broadband business, so next week I'll be using Netfront.

Should be exactly the same; same circuits. We'll see.

Well, just connected to Netfront. And as expected, pretty much the same.

{L_IMAGE}

Later, upload faster, download the same

{L_IMAGE}

Further investigation: the second test was after I got a new modem. Putting back the old modem, upload speed goes back to 0.2M. Swapping to the new one and it's back to 0.4.
So while most use is downloading, the newer modem is what makes the difference, not the line or server.
The "old" modem is NEC ATU-R130, dated Sep 2002.
The "new" one is EX7822r+, Oct 2006 (obviously used and recycled).
Both supplied by PCCW.

So if you have one of the old NEC modems, nag them for an upgrade if you want a bump in upload speed.
