This appeared on the Government's news page which can be found here

Drainage improvement works to commence on Lamma Island
******************************************************
The Government plans to deepen an existing tidal watercourse and construct a stormwater open channel at the upstream of the watercourse to alleviate flooding problems at Yung Shue Long New Village, Lamma Island.

The proposed channel will serve the purpose of collecting and conveying stormwater from Yung Shue Long to Yung Shue Wan.

The works, covering about 250 square metres of the foreshore and sea-bed at Yung Shue Wan, are scheduled to commence in September 2003 for completion by August 2004.

A notice describing the extent of the affected area is published in the Government Gazette today (January 17).

Any person who considers that he has an interest, right or easement in or over the foreshore and sea-bed involved may send a written objection to the Director of Lands, 20/F, North Point Government Offices, 333 Java Road on or before March 17, 2003.

The notice and its related plan can be seen on notice boards posted near the site. The plan is also available for public inspection during office hours at the Lands Department's Survey and Mapping Office, 23/F, North Point Government Offices; and the Islands District Office, 20/F, Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Central.

End/Friday, January 17, 2003

The notice is GN 310 in the Government Gazette of January 17 2003.

The "stream" by the bins is the "After" photo. The lily pond in the valley before the waterworks is the "Before". And this being HK they will probably concrete over the pond, and replace it with a potted palm tree. This plan has been in the works for years (like many other concrete-happy projects).

For more info check out http://www.lamma.net/forum/drains.html
Note that Lamma.net is rarely if ever updated as far as I know.

If any one has more info about this please post...

And by the way - has any one noticed the shotcrete on the main path to Sok Kwu Wan? It has been painted in pseudo camoflage green to try and hide the fact that it's really hideous? I thought it was a bad joke the first time I heard the Dept of Concrete and Landscape Desecration had suggested it...

Here's the govt, announcement w/detailed map of the drainage canal project, courtesy of Lamma.net, where this info and great background has been online for over two years.

A 4m metre wide and 2m deep concrete canal right through the middle of Yung Shue Long valley, my favorite subtropical area on Lamma Island (photo gallery)...

As the notice says "Any person who considers that he has an interest, right or easement in or over the foreshore and sea-bed involved may send a written objection to the Director of Lands, 20/F, North Point Government Offices, 333 Java Road on or before March 17, 2003."

Though by "interest" they probably mean only financial, we can at least try.

Everyone who does object, please copy their message to this thread.
