The south west of Lamma is an SSSI (Site of PSecific Scientific Interest) due to the white bellied sea eagles nesting there. However, this stops at the edge of Sham Wan, the only beach in HK that green turtles nest (occasionally) on. Some years ago the gov't were considering South Lamma as a Country Park, but I am unsure whether that progressed any further or not. Sham Wan is 'supposedly' a no-go area during the summer months, but the number of junks that are seen in there shows how little this is taken notice of.

Got a reply from another environmentally very active individual, re: the nice idea of a Lamma Country Park:

"It was never more than a suggestion from green groups, AFAIK. "Taken under consideration" etc, in other words, a pipe dream.

Under Tung we can expect that there will be no new country parks, and quite possibly they will be gradually eroded and developed.

There was a plan for a large housing estate to be built on the quarry site. That may come back when the economy improves.

The country parks expanded under British governors, like Wilson, who enjoyed tramping in the countryside.
Tung once said he would take a helicopter to see what these parks looked like (presumably from the air), he had apparently never visited one. No sympathy for green there."

In the last few weeks, I have heard from seveeral recommendations to go "outside" and visit country parks. If I remember correctly, some of them were from government officials.

Maybe this SARS issue is a good pretext to revisit the proposal of new & expanded country parks?

Hopefully our friends from SaveLamma or ABLE are monitoring this thread.

Regards,
Alexander
