A few weeks ago someone in YSW found a big wasp nest in their roof (photo below). They called 1823 who passed them to FEHD who told him that they did not deal with infestations on private property.
The FEHD and 1823 websites:
http://www.fehd.gov.hk/english/safefood/risk-pest1.html and http://www.1823.gov.hk/eng/FAQ/009010/index.shtm
Both state that :
FEHD is providing wasps/wild bees disinfestation services to public places. However, the services would not be provided to private or public residential premises appointed with building management companies, as well as all private non-residential premises.
If you read this carefully, it says that it excludes premises with "building management companies"; i.e. blocks of flats as in urban areas.
Probably none of the village houses here have such committees.
But people who do not read past "the services would not be provided to private or public residential premises", can easily conclude that all private homes are EXCLUDED from this service.
And so, as above, a Lamma resident was told simply that FEHD will not serve private property.
So I asked 1823 to clarify. Took them over two weeks to confirm that they DO serve village houses

About the situation mentioned in your mail, I clarify that FEHD will carry out the disinfestation work that located in the village house.
If the wasp / wild bees at the above location still exist, please provide the village house address or your contact phone number for us to carry out investigation and complete the work, please.

Well done again, Alan.
I'd also like to remind people that we should go easy on insects and try to minimize our impact on the environment in general. We probably need them more than they need us, in the long run.
In many parts of the world bees and bumblebees (also crucial to human agriculture as pollinators) have been simply disappearing so go easy on the gentle creatures. If you find one struggling try offering it a drop of honey and hope it finds its way back to the colony.
