Post subject:  Effects of the Lamma Island Power Plant

I am writing to ask you if you have done any research into the effects of the Lamma Island Power Plant? I ask because I am considering moving to Lamma Island, and after doing research on the power plant, I could not find anything in English mentioning whether it is safe to live on the island or not. Given the amount of pollution coal-fired power plants cause in places like China and Korea, I am concerned about the effects of the Power Plant on Lamma's ecology (natural and human), and want to make sure I am aware of the effects of this plant in particular, before considering moving there. Do you know of any reports or research on the Lamma Power Plant that you could send me?

Thank you very much for your response.

Environmental standards are much higher than in China.
The environment is safer and cleaner than any urban part of HK. The plant has high chimneys, the smoke and pollution isn't local.
There are a handful of small delivery trucks, no other vehicles, so no roadside pollution.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I am very interested to take a closer look at "environmental standards" and compare. For me it looks like the plant is mainly a coal-fired power plant, therefore I am specifically interested to get to know which kind of filters are installed, how efficient they work, and if there are any long term surveys available about the impact of the plant to the environment. Please see link below. Does anybody know accessible data? I would really appreciate advice.

Look at HKE's website for info about the plant: https://www.hkelectric.com/en/our-opera ... generation
https://www.hkelectric.com/en/MediaReso ... S_2014.pdf : page 12 "Comprehensive Environmental Protection Measures"

The air on Lamma is better than 90% of Hong Kong. Stand on a hilltop and you can see the brown smog over HK Island and Kowloon.
The worst air pollution in HK is from vehicles: cars, trucks, buses, ships.
We have a dozen village vehicles. The only private transport on Lamma is by bicycle.

If you want pure clean air; don't live in Hong Kong. Seriously, a lot of people are leaving because of that. But if you must live here, Lamma is one of the healthiest places.

It was the grand hope that their cross-harbour tunnel fiber would be made available, now only used for testing and emergencies in the Power station, but not for the daily operation.

PCCW just decided not to use that fiber, for unknown reasons, and upgrade our microwave links from the top of Po Wah Yuen for all of North Lamma Internet and NOW TV, new modem in your home, but same old tel. copper wires, VDSL2 technology.

Expect 30Mbps broadband Internet late this year (start date VERY flexible, pushed back by years already) in much of North Lamma and HD and more channels on NOW TV, at much higher monthly cost...
