Our benevolent overlords will confiscate and destroy any bikes outside the permitted parking area on Thursday 5th Jan.
Including on the pier, by the library, in Main Street and also at the racks outside the old police station at HSY.

Since there are only 298 places in the official parking platform (costing $80,000 each) and more than 450 bike parked there and nearby, unless you feel extra lucky, leave your bike at home that day and it may escape.

When the construction of the new library/museum/WTF begins soon, we'll lose half the already inadequate bike parking area, so they are culling bikes now to reduce demand.
And let's all thank Big Brother for increasing the chocolate ration.

Many of these bikes will be removed tomorrow, anything outside the rails of the Bike Park, including the seafront railings and anywhere around the library.

Tearing down the old library is starting any day now, works are scheduled to start beginning of this month and last well into 2019...

How long will the trees on the seafront last? My own bet is till CNY, but not much longer...

There were about 20-30 "new" bikes at the bike graveyard near the reservoir this evening.

They all had notices dated 3 Jan stapled to them so it seems we still get 2 days' notice.

Nothing really nice, but maybe half were either rideable or easily fixed up. Help yourself if you have the need; the last batch of confiscated bikes are rusted solid and covered with weeds so you're not depriving anyone of anything.
Or of course if you lost a bike, get up there quick.
There are gaps in the fence, no need to climb over.

Well, that didn't take long...
The day after the clearance the "illegally parked" bikes are back, taking a 1-day break, till the next clearance...

If your bike has been confiscated, it's probably up at the Bike Graveyard now (just below the windturbine, left side of Cable Road, just below the Water Reservoir), slowly rusting away, becoming overgrown and being occasionally gutted for spare parts by various people. Photos below from yesterday...

No choice; there are well over 100 bikes left after the official CPA is 100% full. Without the ad hoc parking around the library, they will have to go back along the pier. A triumph of planning.
