A van arrived at the kaido pier yesterday. It's a portable library, presumably to operate next to the DAB Plaza for the months/years/decades they take to build the new palace on the old location.

So the library closes on 28 Dec and they will take up to THREE YEARS to build YLF's $50 million white elephant Three fucking years of using the tiny portable library? Well, it'll be nice going there to consult references or read the newspaper in the 100 square foot van. Will it be worth it in the end? Who knows, I'll be unlikely to see it. Three years is way beyond "temporary" in the real world. Already there was not enough space for locals, especially students to study. All to spend millions on another fat white elephant project "Heritage and Cultural Showroom", which will have nothing of any interest to anyone. But YLF will be there to cut the ribbon.

Service stop to continue providing services during temporary closure of North Lamma Public Library "The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) announced today (December 9) that North Lamma Public Library in Islands District will be temporarily closed, starting from December 28 this year, to carry out the project of Yung Shue Wan Library cum Heritage and Cultural Showroom, Lamma Island under the Signature Project Scheme (Islands District). North Lamma Public library is expected to reopen in 2019. During the temporary closure of North Lamma Public Library, the LCSD will set up a provisional library service stop at TGLA No. TIS 785, Yung Shue Wan Plaza Road, Lamma Island (near Yung Shue Wan Plaza) to continue providing district residents with library services such as the borrowing of books and compact discs, catalogue searching, reservation of library materials, readers' advisory services, etc. The opening hours of the provisional library service stop are as below: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday: 9.45am - 1pm, 2pm - 4.30pm Public Holidays *: 9.15am - 1pm Every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday: Closed * All libraries will be closed on the following public holidays: New Year's Day, the first, second and third days of the Chinese New Year, Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Today our new library is operational. About 100 sq ft, 1/10th the number of books, no newspapers, but no desks or seats to read them at anyway, and no public terminals or gov wifi -- plenty of people used to work at or outside the library on a nice day using that. Also no book return boxes, which they said they would do something about, but no commitment. With the library only open 24 hours a week, these are necessary. Same (inadequate) hours as previously. Tens of millions to pour concrete for more white elephants, nothing for more manhours to provide the service. Better than nothing, of course, and you can still order any book in HK to be delivered to Lamma via the online catalogue: https://www.hkpl.gov.hk/en/index.html

Another month later, still no book return box. Billions for pouring concrete, no interest in providing useful services at minimal cost. |
