One more project not mentioned in last year's report, but earlier, I think. Signature campaign starting today till Mar 10, to build a roof over the ferry pier:

Big discussion after I shared this poster on Facebook, with similar feelings: https://www.facebook.com/Lamma.Gung/posts/10154079896253149 |

One point made there was that putting bike racks along the pier was vetoed because the pier was not strong enough to support them. How much would this roof weigh? A thousand times as much. And in a typhoon the wind load would be enormous. This would require the complete replacement of the pier. So put it up to $50 million. All for a completely useless construction, except for its real use, to put money in the pockets of the contractors who "strongly support" the DAB. |

Opposition to this silly project isn't limited to the usual suspects. A poster campaign, anonymous, all in Chinese, is under way. I saw these on the way up to Tai Peng. Also they have been plastered over YLF's "Strongly request" poster at the Central Lamma pier. All have the same text. The second paragraph refers to the government report saying that the pier is too old and structurally unable to support any extra load. The same one that they used to nix the idea of putting racks on the pier, I think. The photos vary, using different artworks. The one at the pier uses the very appropriate Munch's "The Scream".

And here's my own mashup. Really, the only way you can respond to the idiocy of Yu Lai Fan's projects is to make fun of them. The government is impervious to logic, they will probably build the fucking thing exactly as she wants, after another scripted consultation. Nothing matters except how much the contractors cream off.

As the CEDD declared publicly in District Council meeting that the pier is structurally unsafe to be expanded in any way, not even bike racks, YLF seems to be pushing for a new pier now, including a roof. How this will tie in (or not) with the full Harbour Reclamation Phase II, plans still slowly grinding through the wheels of Govt., remains to be seen... So this bilingual campaign might backfire. But it's early days, no actual project, plans or budget for this roof idea in sight yet. Maybe way after the extensive demolition and building works on the Library for the next 1-2+ years, with expected massive inconveniences and impact on the Bike Park... |
