News from HK Electric:

"The construction of L10 was officially approved by the Government at the end of last year at an estimated total construction cost of around three billion dollars.
Piling work will commence shortly and it is expected that L10 will be put into operation in 2020."

Woaah, that's a lot of cash for local investment! What could this mysterious L10 construction project be?

Reading the entire press release makes it clear, it's actually good news!

Good news for the air quality, global warming and for HK in general, replacing more of our coal with cleaner energy sources...
Using more renewable energy sources like solar and wind would obviously be even better, but that will take a lot more time.

I put questions from Alan, Liz and myself to HK Electric's Public Affairs Dept. yesterday:

“Are there construction plans in the public arena??”
“What are the latest news about using Renewable Energy, especially your Wind Farm plans?”
“Any more plans for solar, outside your Power Station?”
“Can we expect an influx of engineers and builders for this project in North Lamma, driving up the rents even higher?”

Their answers (Thank you for the quick responses):

• Construction of L10 will take place within the Lamma Power Station Extension. Major piling work is planned to start in March 2016 and civil construction works will start in November 2016. The peak construction period will however be sometimes towards late 2017 and early 2019 where the number of construction workers is expected to increase.

• Re the renewable, currently we still have a plan to develop an offshore wind farm off southwest of Lamma Island, though approval of the project is still pending government’s decision.

• In addition, HK Electric keeps on exploring feasibility of developing more solar Photo-voltaics aiming at providing green and affordable electricity to our customers.

• Based on our past experience, builders are mostly local workers and will in general not reside at Lamma, whereas there may be limited number of overseas specialist engineers who might prefer to stay at Lamma.
