Hi Camas

Welcome to Lamma and Lammazine! Looks like you had a cool time in Antartica (yeah, well, enough of the corny jokes)

I know that one pressing issue on Lamma is that of dog management. So anything you can do to help in that regard will be greatly appreciated by dog lovers and haters. Ms Yu Lai Fan has had some recent correspondence which I am sure you are aware of regarding trap, neuter, release. Informed decisions on that would be most welcomed. It might not be exactly a Police issue but it is one that could become one if not addressed.

On a personal front. I have a question about what to do with snakes if we find them in our homes. Some years ago we were told to call the Police. Is that still the case, or is there a specialist on Lamma? Horrid things, but they do deserve a life, just not in my property!

I guess I'll see you on the street at some point to say hello.

Regards :)

Hi Camas,

Welcome to Lamma!

I have noticed over the years that all the Emergency Services seem to have incredible difficulty in locating anyone's house in an emergency. Do you think you could possibly get your officers and the Fire and Ambulance services to use the marvellous government resource which can be located in any web browser on a mobile device at www1.map.gov.hk which can pinpoint any house on Lamma as it seems whatever system you currently use doesn't seem very effective.

Many thanks!

A bit of history of the old Police Station above Hung Shing Yeh beach and a guided New Police Station tour by Camas Tung, our brand-new Police Chief.

It's in Chin. only, awaiting RTHK's Eng. version in the future. But this Police Report has some great historic and brand-new footage, so well worth watching. It starts by re-enacting a crime in the sitting-out area just besides the YSW Tin Hau Temple and continues with a guided tour inside our new YSW Police Station at 2:10 minutes.

Watch in HD and full-screen:

Dear Ms Tung,

First of all it's wonderful that you have taken this great initiative to start a "police corner" on Lamma.com! You look very cool on your snowmobile in the first picture!

A Filipino friend of mine recently told me that she frequently got her HKID checked by the police on Lamma, and the frequency increased last week to twice in a week. I am concerned by what seems to me selective racial profiling in law enforcement here on the island as well as in the rest of Hong Kong (see http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/arti ... e?page=all). If this is true, then this practice is discriminatory. It's certainly not conducive to a harmonious island life where our South/southeast Asian neighbours and friends are just as honest and law-abiding as the rest of us are, and it does nothing to reduce crime.

It would be great if you can kindly explain whether the police force has any policy or safeguards to ensure equality in police enforcement on this forum? Lamma is a multiethnic community and we care a lot about whether all ethnicities are treated equally and with respect. Thank you!

Twice a week? Is your friend hanging out in Lamma bars late at night?

My id has never ever been checked by police since moving to Lamma over a decade ago and I do hang out in bars occasionally (rarely) late at night. I could be wanted-for-murder or at least an illegal overstayer in long-term hiding here and wouldn't have a problem.

Why am I not being checked like so many other people, including quite a lot of Westerners, especially in bars?
Shouldn't I be checked at least as much (or as little) as anybody else?

I'll need to ask Camas in person next time I meet her and complain about this positive discrimination. In our multi-ethnic community we really do care a lot about whether all our 60+ nationalities and multitude of ethnicities are treated equally and with respect!

Lamma Police's Got Talent

Hi all,

Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the largest festivals in Chinese culture, is coming up. If you see the posters at piers, you may have been aware of the mid-autumn carnival which will take place at Yung Shue Wan Sport Ground between 7 pm and 10:30 pm on 6th September 2014. Are you an expert on police-related issues on Lamma? Come and take the challenge at the “Police Riddle Stall” designed by Lamma Police for the carnival and win one of the prizes below. Even if you are not an expert, come and see how many riddles you can solve.

Lamma Police's Got Talent? Take a guess? One of our officers has got talent in magic and will demonstrate it at the carnival. Lots of fun that you can’t miss, or take the chance to come and just say hello!

Back to a local issue, some of you pointed out that the address numbering on Lamma is quite confusing and our officers may take time to look for any particular address during emergency. Our officers are generally conversant with the addresses on the main paths. However, we may take a longer time to locate you if you are in a rural or isolated area on the island, even with a specific address. While we would do our best to mark rural addresses on our map, I appeal for your assistance in giving us more descriptions of your location when you call the Police for help. Descriptions may include numbers on lamp posts and slopes, the closest landmark and/or surrounding features. With more information, we will be able to reach you sooner.

For your information, the English version of the TV episode on Lamma Island will be shown on "Police Report" at 7:20 pm on TVB Pearl on 27th September 2014 and 6:50 pm on ATV World on 28th September 2014.

As a general reminder, in order maintain appropriate confidentiality; remember not to post reports relating to cases, crimes, complaints or criminal intelligence in the blog here. You can always report by phone, email, fax or in person direct to Hong Kong Police Force. Remember, if you have any information relating to crime or offences taking place on Lamma or anywhere in HK, we want to hear from you.

From our monthly Police Corner guest blogger, Lamma Police Chief Camas Tung:

"Further to my previous article on online auction fraud, I would like to talk about email scam this time. Nowadays, email is a common form of communication channel for liaising with relatives and friends as well as commercial partners. Many folks on Lamma are expatriates and you may use email as a primary channel for overseas communications. There is a trend for criminal gangs to hack email accounts and try all sorts of ways to cheat victims to make remittances.

The most common scenario is the fraudster pretending to be your overseas relatives or friends who need immediate money remittance from you for some kind of emergency reason. After hacking into your friend or relative’s personal email account, fraudsters send out deceptive emails to all persons, including you, on the contact list of the account. The email purported that the sender had encountered an accident overseas and requested you to transfer money to accounts designated by the fraudsters as a matter of urgency.

We therefore call on you to be alert of suspicious emails, and raise your awareness in preventing this kind of scam, such as taking the initiative to confirm the true identities of recipients or the genuineness of the requests by telephone or other means before remittances, so as to prevent such kind of scam.

Please check out more tips on crime prevention of email scam from Police Public Page:

http://www.police.gov.hk/ppp_en/04_crime_matters/tcd/types_02.html

Don’t become a victim of Email Scam!

Christmas is coming and let me be among the first to wish you and your families a happy and enjoyable festive period. Please remember to have fun and enjoy the extra public holidays, but always stay safe, look after yourselves and try not to overindulge too much!

As a general reminder, in order maintain appropriate confidentiality; remember not to post reports relating to cases, crimes, complaints or criminal intelligence in the blog here. You can always report by phone, email, fax or in person direct to Hong Kong Police Force. Remember, if you have any information relating to crime or offences taking place on Lamma or anywhere in HK, we want to hear from you."

Submitted by Camas TUNG Hei-man - Officer Commanding Lamma Island & Peng Chau, Cheung Chau Division:

Welcome back to Police Corner!

This month, I would like to share some good news with you that three residents of Lamma Island have obtained the Good Citizen Award for 2014 for assisting the Police in the arrest of criminals for illegal tree-cutting activities in April 2014. The Good Citizen Award Scheme is presented to honour and recognize those Hong Kong citizens who have greatly assisted the Police in fighting crime.

This scheme was actually the first “Fight Crime Campaign” in Hong Kong. Police rely very much on the help, assistance and support from you, the public. We officially recognize very significant help in the Good Citizen Award Scheme, but also encourage you to make contact or come forward at anytime, with any information that you think we need to know. For Lamma Island, please don’t be hesitant to contact us anytime. Let’s work together for a crime free and safe community!

The award presentation was held in Tsuen Wan on 10 February 2015. A total of four residents from the outlying islands, three from Lamma and one from Cheung Chau, received the award there.

Let me show you the happy moment of the ceremony with the photo below:

As we are now in the year of the Ram and the Spring break holiday is around the corner, many of you may take several days off and leave hectic Hong Kong for vacation. Most burglary is opportunistic in nature, meaning that burglars take immediate advantage of what they perceive to be lax security. So when you are away, please remember to secure your home including locking up your windows, doors, balconies, setting your alarm system, turning on your CCTV, etc.

The below Police Magazine episode (Chinese version only) tells you more about domestic security:

You can also check out the simple precautions from the below link:
http://www.police.gov.hk/ppp_en/04_crime_matters/cpa/cpa_ds.html

Enjoy your holiday and be a smart traveller! All of our Lamma Police officers wish you a prosperous, happy, healthy and crime free Year of Ram!

May Police Corner, exclusively for Lamma.com.hk, by our Police Chief:

A burglary has recently taken place at a residential premises on Lamma with a number of items stolen. The culprit gained entry to the house by prizing a ground floor window. Investigations are proceeding with regard to that case and we will do our best to catch the culprit. However, in the meantime I want to alert you all to be extra cautious and take appropriate security measures in case the culprit tries something similar again.

Summer time is around the corner and many of you may take days off and leave hectic Hong Kong for vacation. Also, many of you work away from Lamma during the day and may well leave your flat empty. Most burglary is opportunistic in nature, meaning that burglars take immediate advantage of what they perceive to be lax security. So when you are away, please remember to secure your home including locking up your windows, doors, balconies, setting your alarm system, turning on your CCTV, etc.

If you don’t have any security system in your home, I highly recommend you to install one, even a simple alarm may scare the opportunistic thief away. At the same time we, the Lamma Police, will step up patrols and also conduct patrols in plain clothes.

The below Police Magazine episode (Chinese version only) tells you more about domestic security.

http://podcast.rthk.hk/podcast/item_epi.php?pid=144&lang=zh-CN&id=50670

大家亦可點擊以下連結參考一些簡單的預防措施:
http://www.police.gov.hk/ppp_en/04_crime_matters/cpa/cpa_ds.html

讓我們一起努力,令南丫島繼續成為安居之所!在此呼籲大家如看見任何可疑事情或有任何資料,請撥打緊急號碼999或直接致電南丫警崗與南丫島的警察聯絡,電話號碼:36611714。

It was in Wang Long on a Sunday afternoon I think. The victim posted on the Lamma residents FB page a couple of weeks ago.
