Update on progress of construction which has been going on outside The Waterfront for many weeks now, stressing their nerves and the nerves of people living nearby, I'd guess.

The Rain Shelter, err, Fish Market is getting closer to completion but probably not before Easter?
Bare concrete and tiles, no walls or weather protection for the fishmongers besides a high, curvy glass/plastic roof, making it look a bit like a mini airport terminal. Don't look for protection in there when typhoon surges splash high over the seawall in front!

Many rooftops in YSW have canopies this size or larger. Supported through typhoons by a few steel poles, put up in a day or two for a few thousand dollars.

Yu Lai Fan is building the pyramids. Monuments to herself, using as much concrete as possible, costing the maximum amount she can get away with, that she can cut the ribbon for, instead of something useful to the public. But any project she has her fingers in is like that. Digital clock on huge pillars in the middle of a sitting out area. Cycle park in the harbour. Millions pissed away so the construction contractors get a payday. The public made to put up with months long inconvenience when a simpler, better solution could be built in a few days for a tiny proportion of the cost.

The Rain Shelter, err, "Twilight Fish Market" seems completed now. Massive pillars, but no benches or enough space for the fish sellers? As it's empty and unused in the evenings, some Water Front patrons might start using as their outdoor smoking and drinking area?

This seawall-side area has been well-known to be severley splashed during typhoons. Awaiting the next typhoon tide surges, I hope to see some pictures of the several metres tall splashes going over the curvy roof and splashing some passers-by on the front, path-side of this structure!?

Anybody got a photo of fishes being actually sold in there in the morning twilight (long before I usually arrive in YSW from Pak Kok), to be published with full credits!

We've got no name for the "interesting" structure yet!
A few great names are already proposed on Jess King's Facebook Wall:

Stonehenge-on-sea
Lamma Disco
Pole Dance Stage
Skateboard Park-on-Stilts
Multi-storey Bicycle Park
(with a box on top, containing a digital clock mounted on an over engineered and unsightly steel beam.)
Waterfront Beer Garden
Typhoon Surge Protector
Lamma Surfing Center
...

Since it's such a balls-up, how about Yu Lai Fan's Codpiece?

Had a look, it's almost finished. Only took several months to build a canopy.

Notice the thoughtful design: the enormous pillars that could support IFC give a sense of power and exclude any plebeian fishmongers who might try to take shelter under the ornamental roof. And the rainwater downpipes, not concealed inside the pillars, but in the best tradition of Lamma plumbing, cheap plastic pipes boldly bolted onto the nearest wall.

Obviously inspired by both the original Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Centre Pompidou-Metz for the roof.

Lamma can be proud of this new landmark.

I hope the designer of this so called shelter is NOT an architect. He/she might loos the HKIA certification with this roof. It is not a shelter against any HK rain and to design a wave in this small scale which is collecting the water in the middle...
Hopefully nobody payed for this disaster of 'shelter'.
Other question, I read and hear again and again something about Fish Market. How many booth can be hold under this Shelter? A market is something where you can buy from different people thought but this shelter looks a bit small for a market. More like a bus stop. Do we have now a bus line going through Lamma? Wondering.
So my name suggestion would be something more like: Lamma Fish Stop Shelter.

Yes, I am new here. Thought I am not new to this kind of topic after working for several years as architect in Mainland China.
So, no architect, bad design, a lot of lost money for nothing .... I am new, but this topic sound familiar.
All my best wishes to the poor fisherman who seek for shelter next rainy day.

Here's the fish market in action this morning.

The stall keepers set up outside the pavilion, since the absurd pillars make the space under the roof unusable.

They use their own umbrellas for shade as they did before.

So, complete waste of money that results in the usable area of the market being reduced by half.

Everyone is worse off except the builders.
I guess at least 1/2 million flushed down the toilet for this monument to Yu Lai Fan.
