Following up on the developments last year in Shek Pai Wan and Tung O Wan in South Lamma, I just got this mobile phone picture of Shek Pai Wan. This is the frequently cleaned beach in South Lamma, one bay before Turtle Beach, submitted by Robert Hope-Jones. He writes: "Contractors were very worried about my photographing this rather large hole being dug at Tung O. Not sure if they are burying this crane gear as part of construction, but trying to stop photos raised my awareness of their activities. I reported it to police at Sok Kwu Wan police station. Maybe post this up as someone might know what is happening." Here's the backstory of these developments, NOT related to the Baroque on Lamma, but probably carried out by the Village Head of Tung O Village?? Jan 9, 2012: Tung O Village Head Tour Jan 10, 2012: What's Going on in Tung O Wan? The nearby construction works off the beach had been stopped more than a year ago by the Lands Dept. and it's been in limbo ever since. I'll follow up with my sources in South Lamma in due course, but maybe some of the forum members know more already about this current digging works?

They were digging what looked like a trench for sinking that very long section of wood (it must have been about 40ft long), that had metal pivot hubs at each end. It is very likely some sort of lifting gear that will take materials from barges, similar to the one in the photo. Water was pouring into the trench, which was slowing them down. It was getting dark by the time I arrived, but they continued to to work on as the light faded. One of the local villagers tried to stop me from taking a photo. I recognised him from previous Tung O articles on this website. I wonder what they are doing? |

Thanks for all the details! He wasn't camera-shy at all when he showed us his developments last year. I'll follow up with him or his family members directly during my next trip down there this Thursday, after spending all of Sunday, 2 days ago, hiking over Ling Kok Shan and then up another hill above the ex-Lamma Quarry, where 1,000+ youngsters were planting one tree each. |
