My summer intern was at the same press briefing yesterday, but The Standard and other newspapers published it first. The Lamma-zine will be focusing on the Lamma tours and get people to vote for them. Yes, night eco-tours in Sok Kwu Wan, a first for the Conservancy Assoc. I've been trying to convince them for a long time to do English tours as well and asked them to let me join one of of their current all-Chin. tours, specifically this "night safari". Lamma-zine story & photos coming up.... Any volunteers who'd would like to be trained as Lamma eco-tour guides for English tours, or do I need to volunteer myself? Just be careful not to step on the frogs. I almost did on my way from Tung O to Mo Tat Wan after a concert there several years ago. |

Not easy!! I always apologise to the frog when I inadvertently kick one in the dark, on cable road, while out with the dog. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I twist an ankle avoiding one in my path or tripping over one at the last moment. Pretty cool though.... to live in a place with such wildlife. Just think .. tourists pay good money just to come and witness this and listen to the 'frog chorus' and we get it for free
I'm really developing a fondness for frogs and snakes since I moved to a new location on Lamma. (didn't really encounter them before) |

What about the nocturnal creatures in the main st, the occasional chorus can be heard by them too! |

Yeah.... but they are much bigger than frogs, so not really easy to trip over. Just another part of Lamma flora/fauna/characters. Pretty diverse wouldn't you say. It's a dying art. |

The latest version of the "Lamma Island Eco-tour map" has been published by the Conservancy Association and HK Electric. There are now 2 additional local eco-tours, bringing the total to 5. All of them in Cantonese only so far: Ecology ABC, Wonders of Wind Energy, Ramble on the Rocks, The HK Greenhouse, Night Safari. Even though I've hiked all those 5 trails many times, there are sightseeing spots along the way I seem to have missed! Boat House? Pak Kok Tree Planting Site? Wall Tree? Pick up the free, large, bilingual map - probably also the best Lamma tourist guide available - at the Rural Committee offices or the District Council office in the next few weeks (not available there yet, I've checked). This eco-tour concept is really something that should be appreciated. Still, I have an impression there is a misleading bias in the presentation. It says about “abundant environmental resources and diverse natural habitats”. What is to be seen are actually miserable remnants of the natural environment. Great they are still there – a small enclave besieged from every direction. The eco-tour focuses on them, not on the pollution, devastation, decimated specimen of fauna and flora, illegal logging of “scent tree”, overfishing, etc. How e.g. can you talk about mudflats area at the estuary of the creek in Sok Kwu Wan (a point on the tour) and ignore tons of rubbish and stench of sewage from the restaurants. My feeling is the nature still survives here not really by some kind of wise commitment and decision of governments. This is largely by coincidence and twist of history. The villages were abandoned. The developers were not interested (until now). The need for fire wood disappeared. The rock quarrying became uneconomical. This leaflet is a rosy picture, not the true story. Wrong message, wrong education. |

Totally agree rambler. This is why I am always impressed with 'great groups' that try to protect a decent way of living for humans, the eco systems, nature and animal rights, in no particular order. I try to help were I can. But in this mad city, I know that I don't have 'what it takes'. I just want to strangle people most of the time when I become involved.
I have phases where I become despondent and fazed by the bollocks of the lies and greed, and corporations and money people that just think - fuck everyone else. It's all about profit. But happy when 'posts' here bring me back to reality as to how it really is, and then realise that people nowadays can make a difference. And I realise I can be one of them And I do try. More people can too.

The new, updated Lamma Eco-Tour Map above is available now. Pick up a copy from the literature rack outside the District Council office on Main Street (just besides the Lamma Gourmet shop). This is probably the best tourist map and guide currently available, featuring 5 local walks instead of the usual single one (Family Trail) in other online and printed tourist maps/guides. All the 5 featured walks are highly recommended and pretty doable (Ling Kok Shan features, but Mt. Stenhouse is NOT included). The map is also linked from the Tourist Info section on the left side of the home page and all Lamma-zine pages: NEW Eco-Tour Map There's one more new Eco-Tour Map, featuring the Country Parks of Aberdeen, Tai Tam and Lung Fu Shan. Not available on Lamma, but I've got a copy if you're interested. |
