It seems to me that what we need is a candidate who supports *more* development on lamma. YLFs response to the questions from the Green Lamma Group clearly demonstrates how ineffective she has been in promoting both the harbour reclamation and the bicycle park. By her own admission these have taken /years/ and are still not underway.

In 4 years time someone needs to run on a ticket of More Houses, Easier Rezoning, More Roads, Easier VV access, fast-track planning applications, more concrete. (Sok Ku Wan harbour reclamation, anyone?)
Oh, and supporting an outlying islands elderly maintenance grant for the over 65s

Speak to the voters in a language they understand: greed.

(What said candidate does once in office is another matter)

What you need is a candidate that is aware of views and concerns of ALL Lamma residents regardless of whether they are indigenous/HK Chinese or foreigners that have chosen to make Lamma their home.

I have never met, spoken to or even seen YLF. I only know what she looks like from pictures. I assumed that she is just not interested in knowing the views of / or meeting 'foreigners'. However, during the elections, many of my Chinese friends who have moved here from HK side, and have lived here for many years, have told me that they have never met or seen her either.

I think things will be radically different in 4 years time :-) so I hope this will prompt her to actually do something that is beneficial for all parties, or at the very least to get out and about and make herself a tad more visible, and to show that she actually does give a shit about people out side of her circle that tell her what to do.

while this may be against what you believe is best for Lamma it seems the other voters disagree with you - plain and simple.

I don't see why you keep repeating that. We know the result, it's self evident and no one is saying otherwise or that the poll was invalid. It doesn't mean that we have to be happy about it. There are quite a lot of elected leaders that I have hated with a passion. But I didn't advocate armed insurrection to overturn an election.

So Alan , in essence you agree that all the grumbling is just sour grapes then ?

If you prefer.

That doesn't mean anyone doubts what the result was, which is what :
{L_QUOTE}:

implies.

Yes, I KNOW THE OTHER VOTERS DISAGREED.
I knew that at 12:30 AM on Monday.

And are you actually a DAB supporter, or do you just enjoy taunting those who lost?

Xerves, yes,.. YLF has won. No one is disputing that. Are many disappointed? Of course. This is universal in any election. So move on.....

But times are a changin' :-)

Of course it's going to take another four years, but things will change. In the meantime, I hope that the elected representative actually does something for the whole of Lamma, and not just a few.

Transparency and awareness are the way of the new millenium...... bear that one in mind. If you don't represent and take care of, and/or listen to the views of the whole tax paying community, then they should bugger off and allow someone who will. Quite simple really.

Just a reminder, Ireland has extremely cheap property and a tax rate almost as low as HK. They also know how to smile, sing and drink beer, so if your preparing your parachute!!

>>> And they LOVE nature there. I'm sooo in. I even have an Irish name. Casey, and if you pronounce my last name, sometimes you say Luck. Irish are lucky. And then when 2012 comes around and the Sky ships come to take away the Children of Tir An, I can like stowaway on it to the planet of immortal with sexy Irish babes, with soft red hair. Chinese love red heads. Everything smells like Mountains.

And get this I can doo alllllllll the gardening I want to my hearts content. If you want to give me heaven, just give me a hoe, a lawn mower, saftey goggles, ear plugs, and clothes to get dirty in, So in heaven, just give me a job working in the parks...

I'm more of a Scottland fan myself though. I love rocks and mountains, and well rocks and mountains. And dry cold air.

Femminist Writer Madame Sarah Grand, coiner of the term "New Woman", (which gave Yu-Yu the privilige to even vote let alone run for office... was Irish. If you don't know this lady's writings, you should look them up they're very very good, but sadly as with many victorian writers her writings disappeared. Time to rediscover?

When I walked off the boat from Central to YSW on Sunday morning I wondered why there were signs on the pier for people coming by ferry to show them the way to the polling station. If they they really lived here surely they would know where the polling station was. Very suspicious.

>>> Not necessarily as Alan mentioned, as a elections worker, during Nenshi's purple revolution Calgary. (again the problem here, people voted with their heads, and wanted an "Obama" like yes we can political wave. (to vote in a complete nincompoop who has zero political experience, vs his counter parts who worked to improve Calgary for years....

Anyways, many many voters came to the WRONG poling station, They just see a gaggle of humans going to one school, instead of going to the school next door for their street or block. Then they get mad when you can't find their elections card. Or perhaps some have moved in within the necessary minimum to live there, but missed the census to register... so you fill out their name and info if they have ID.... Then you find out that they're in the wrong place. Because of the unique nature of THIS elections, it was a logistical nightmare not akin to a Shanghai rush hour pushy pushy metro push lamanze breathing (when you scream out Push)....

Gah.... Then you have to COUNT the ballots, and EVERY ballot counts, even if it's clear that so and so won by a land slide in this riding. We miss counted because we're all amature volunteers until it was 3 am....... Nenshi won. my dude only got TWO votes. Somehow people like voting the sexy looking Zephrod Beeblebraxes.......DAB just looks sexy to voters. who doesn't like a voter that's patriotic? (Even though these party members too part in riots that HURT ALOT OF PEOPLE especially blowing up 3 children... Children, and locking up the elders of this certain ethnicity in homeless cages.. If this is Development and Betterment, I HATE to see what they'd do if they a crappy job... perhaps, install a Golkar like junta, or a Tatmadaw like junta.

My polling agent wrote an article on what she observe, see if anyone interest to read.

English: http://www.interlocals.net/
Chinese Version: http://www.inmediahk.net/%E5%8D%97%E4%B ... nt-1022173

As a polling agent on Lamma

(Arthur:Oiwan) Many of my friends run for the district election. But I have been too busy to throw myself into assisting election campaign. Not until the last two days did I have time to spend one day in Pat Heung for Hoi dick Chu; and another in Lamma Island for Damon Wong, while I was also assigned as a polling agent. I have shared two stories on Facebook after I finished my job. I read 紀曉風 "Where do the votes come up?" and on second thought do not think I have done my job seriously enough. We will have to reorganized our resources and amend the loopholes of election.

On 6th, around one o’clock I took up my shift from another polling agent called Sophie. I was told that there were two ferries carrying two hundred elders to come here to vote that morning. They all voted for Yu Lai Fun. As they were all firm with their decision, polling officers indicated the circle next to Yu Lai Fun when they were assisting them to vote. Some neighbours saw this and reminded Sophie to be monitor cautiously. She suspected that some polling officers told some foreigners to fill in the voter registration form without inspecting weather they were registered voters, which was an official procedure, so as to let them vote in the next year. She complained about this. While I was on my duty, a few elders could not find their name on the Register of Electors. They made some phone calls and realized their elector registrations were valid only in Wah Kwai Estate. Not until I inquired the local people and Damon Wong did I know the two hundred votes in the morning were all casted by the elders in Wah Fu Estate and Wah Kwai Estate.

After second though, I did find this incident very tricky. First I was amazed by how powerful Yu Lai Fun the candidate and her agents were. They had full knowledge of the information of the voters in Lamma Island, as well as those who had moved away. That is why they could arrange vehicles to take them to the ferry pier and got them into the same ferry to Yung Shue Wan, let them had breakfast and voted. Even the Election Committee did not have those information. My puzzles go on if it is a violation of the residence ordinance if the elders live in public housing, such as Wah Fu Estate and Wah Kwai Estate, but retain their elector’s registry in Lamma Island? I ask this because their elector registration information could be a proof that shows they live elsewhere.

People on Facebook even ask if this is illegal. A lot of grey areas exist. Many people forget to change the address in the registry after they move; others move their home very often. They simply use the address of their parents’. The latter is personal preference. But the former involves those who now have arranged vehicles or ferries taking them to the designated districts to vote. In the next election the election committee should emphasize that people should register the same district where they are living in. They should explain to public housing residence not to change their address in the registry, lest they may lose their eligibility for public housing.

Lamma Island is a community that consists only two thousand voters. Two to three hundred votes could hold enough sway to the election. Some journalists pointed out that each address should be scrutinized to avoid multiple registrations with resort apartments or with only one address. I agree poll inspection should be carried out not just on the election day. The register of electors should be cautiously crosschecked with local residence.

One more incident occurred. The poll station was quite small and a pub was located right in the front, where a group of people were watching a football match. The no canvasing zone was actually quite large; but a man in white T-shirt kept pushing people into the poll station. I was inside the station and therefore could not handle that. I got Sophie standing outside the station and had an eye on it. Not long after the man in white pushed people into the polling station. She made a complain to the polling staff immediately and stopped the canvassing activities in front of the polling station.

These experiences will encourage us to perform polling scrutiny better in the next election. The following are two shameful incidents written on Facebook at that night. The first involves a very old lady; the second the canvassing of a barman. Polling staff can make testify them and they handled the cases in a fair way.

First, Yu Lai Fun from DAB (Democracy According to Beijing) used a woman who was almost a hundred years old, suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and who did not know who to vote. Almost half an hour was gone but she was still not done. A retuning officer asked loudly whom the lade wanted to vote read out one by one all candidates’ name. But she still did not give any response. The returning officer asked once again if she would like to vote. She answered no. The person who had led her into the station said, ”Of course she doesn’t know how to vote as she had Alzheimer’s disease. She has a paper in hand, on which the will of her family is written.” Obviously she cannot vote at the end, but this is really shameful.

Second, The boss of the pub in front of the polling station kept on egging people to vote for DAB. Once he pushed a drunken man inside. The man shouted he needed to vote number 1. The polling staff stopped him and checked his ID card. In fact he was not an elector. He said he wanted to register, since he thought he could vote once he did so. He was declined and when he went outside he talked to the boss that it was “their” fault not to let him vote.

Last but not least, there was a political spinning that damaged the new professionalism of South China Morning Post (SCMP). It gives extensive coverage on the election day on a report by Yu Lai Fun, whose banner was written a script “I love concrete” by a thick marker and on whose face was added the toothbrush moustache. Another candidate’s banner was written a script “I split the vote”. In fact most of the background given in the content is quite neutral; but the editor decided this as smear campaign and wrote a headline “Island candidate in Hitler protest”, which alluded that Damon Wong had besmirched his opponents. And it quoted, “People think that’s inappropriate and uncalled for. It is really bad for the political process here.”

The media defines unidentified damage conduct as smear campaign. In this case the responsibility falls solely on the one whose material was not daubed and who does not have a background of League of Social Democrats, which mean Damon Wong. People who turn their stomach against politics would refuse to vote once they saw something like smear campaign. A foreign person told us during I am electioneering that what SCMP had done was very bad and would influence the will of voting of some people. Luckily he comforted me by assuring that his vote would not be moved by these kind of report. However, a lot of people who live in Lamma Island are civil servant and read SCMP. They disgusted smear campaign. They were normally the group that is most likely to cast their votes . No wonder the rumour was big that SCMP has become the English Wen Wei Po and Ta Kung Pao.

The headline of the SCMP article, calling it a "Hitler protest" when no one, not even the graffiti artist, ever used that name, was pretty obnoxious.

But I doubt anyone who cares enough about local affairs to vote would have believed Damon had anything to do with it or changed their vote because of that. We're used to the media writing sensational crap articles about Lamma.

Damon, do you have further information about it?
For example, which polling station did "the two hundred votes by the elders in Wah Fu Estate and Wah Kwai Estate" go? YSW/SKW?
Did you/your people take any photo about it?
If you found it's illegal, just complain to the government (remember also providing evidence  ).

With all the recently reported arrests for vote rigging has anything been mentioned about the alleged fixing of votes on Lamma?

If people were really ferried over from Aberdeen to vote there must be a way to prove it and a complaint should be lodged. It would be interesting to see how many elderly ex-Lamma villagers are still registered as living on the island. It would be simple to work out if there were houses with an abnormal number of people registered as living there.

Yes, has this gone any further? The Registration and Electoral Office is still taking electoral complaints very seriously. YLF thorougly deserves a grilling. One avenue for complaints, info etc: reoenq@reo.gov.hk

No, it hasn't gone any further.

I've mentioned this to Damon Wong in person 3 days ago, when a few Lammaites were invited by the Tung O Village Head to tour his construction plans down there (Lamma-zine story in progress).

Damon recently got married (congrats!) and didn't seem eager to proceed on this issue. It would take hundreds of changed votes to make any difference to Lamma's election results. Where the ICAC stepped in was in constituencies where somebody won by just a few votes, where just a few illegal votes could change the election outcome.

Yes, but irrespective of the winning margin, the REO could hardly ignore a blatant violation of their regulations. I can understand Damon's reluctance to make an objection - he doesn't want to fall foul of the Lamma mafia - but it will be a shame if she gets away with it.

I'm happy for this to go further,

Thank you Marc Antony for the link.

I'm incredibly impressed that Damon has the 'balls' to 'tell it like it is' on Lamma at the moment. I am looking forward so much to the next elections!

And congratulations to Damon on his marriage!!

Lets hope they now follow-up on the boat load of Ap Lei Chau DABers who visited Lamma on 11 Nov for a joy ride & dim sum

SCMP 07/02/12

Two months' jail for village election fraud

Marketing executive Keith Paul Wong Kwok-pong, 39, a former resident of Tai Mei Tuk village in Tai Po, was sentenced to two months' jail for voting in a village representative election last year despite having moved to Hong Kong Island in 2006. He had pleaded guilty earlier in Fanling Court to one count of engaging in corrupt conduct with respect to voting in the election. His father, a former village head, had stood in the election. The charge was laid against Wong by the Independent Commission Against Corruption last week.
